Hugh Cambridge is partway through an analysis of an artifact - an old one, part of an extended paper that he'd never finished - when the transition comes.

At first, he assumes the ship's entered some sort of anomaly, and he turns away from the viewport (the stars have shifted, how odd), his hand moving to his combadge. A quick touch, and he starts, "Cambridge to -"

This isn't Voyager. In fact, this is the Ten-Forward of a Galaxy Class starship, unless he misses his mark. Populated with a few handfuls of people, some out of uniform, some in uniform, but those in are wearing the style that was in use twenty years earlier. Cambridge's uniform has shoulders of a grey-purple, and the turtleneck inside is medical/science blue. His combadge is thinner and sleeker.

"- Oh, bugger," finishes Cambridge. It's an illusion or it's time travel - neither of those bodes well.

Lorna is used to people giving her the eye, but she doesn't like it. She drops her hand, her expression becoming less cheerful. In a ship full of aliens people were normally treating her like nothing special. She doesn't want to deal with the very visible fact that she is special all the time.

"You said your name. Mine's Lorna." She isn't rude but she is clearly somewhat deflated.

Starfleet. Ugh. Lorna makes a small face. Still, he's not immediately trying to take over the ship so she doesn't mention her general perception of Starfleet and its officers. "A few months. It's harder to tell here. Are you a counselor like you're on a council or are you a counselor like you have a couch and diagnose people's crazy." She's not entirely sure which answer she hopes for, but it seems important to know.

His laugh puts Lorna's edginess to rest somewhat. She smiles again, laughing at her own silliness. It is important to remember that not every counselor is like Emma Frost or even Professor Xavier. "Sorry, that was really rude, huh? I've had a few bad experiences. You're not a telepath, I hope." Somehow the two always went hand in hand.

Lorna doesn't have great mental discipline, which makes her prey to all kinds of unsavory telepaths. She nods and takes a drink of her synthetic vodka and cranberry juice. "I have too. Not as many touch-telepaths, though."

After a moment of contemplation she shakes her head at herself and scoots the chair opposite her out with her foot. "Have a seat, Counselor. Want something to drink? You're taking all this pretty well."

"It's important to be flexible when you've been kidnapped by a time traveling jerk." Lorna agrees. If he's being arrogant she honestly can't tell anymore. He's not half as bad as Pietro or her father. She sits back and crosses her legs, still smiling at her companion. "There's already a counselor, I think, but she's probably pretty busy with all the unexpected new people. It seems like everyone that got brought here is some kind of crazy." Herself certainly included.

Actually, now that she thinks about it. . . "Of course my father alone could keep you busy for a month." Now she leans forward conspiratorially.

Lorna laughs again. Now he's being arrogant. "It would take you that long to get him to talk to you." Sometimes the best thing to do was offer a challenge. Anyone wanting to examine Magneto has to be up for everything that entails. She doesn't imagine her father will cooperate, even if he is willing to attempt therapy. Given his experiences she doesn't anticipate it will be easy.

Her expression becomes softer, less judgemental. "He's been through so much." Despite it all she can't hate her father. It would be easier if she could.

Lorna looks anxious as she thinks about what Magneto has been through. Some of it she can't identify with. The worst bits she can, now. She downs the last of her vodka cranberry and takes a deep breath. "Then I imagine you'll be quite busy."

The conversation is getting uncomfortably close to her own issues. She's not ready to deal with them just yet, so she tries to think of a different topic.

He's being very blunt about it, which both annoys and relieves Lorna. She nods and leans back a little, pushing a hand through her hair. "I'm not sure I want to share my problems with Starfleet right now. They're not going out of their way to show themselves as trustworthy."

[personal profile] magneticxman 2015-07-04 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Lorna makes a small face. "I have a lot to lose if the government doesn't want to play nice with me. In my experience that's usually the case. Picard seems fine but he has superiors I don't trust." It all comes down to how Picard would handle an order to hurt or study them. The thought is too unnerving for Lorna st the moment.

She doesn't like being studied. Lorna forums uncomfortably in her seat. He might have a good point. She simply doesn't know.

"That's not how it works in my time and I just don't know who I can trust, if anyone, except for the people I knew back home."

It's a tall order. Lorna licks her lips and nods, though her expression makes it clear she's not so sure about this. "I'll try." It's all she can promise.

[personal profile] magneticxman 2015-07-04 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Lorna nods again, giving him a small smile. "Good luck. I hope you like it here."
