A Ride on the M // WIZARD, W, ALL RIDERS, ASSEMBLE! // HOLODECK MOTORCYCLE COURSE OPEN!

Shotaro has been quite busy in the holodeck for the last week or two, and he was usually working on something on a PADD (though his typewriter was never far behind it). He had definitely been embracing the Enterprise's tech in a big way, only occasionally needing a bit of help from Philip. But, it was a delicate dance between figuring this system out and not giving Philip enough information for him to guess what was going on. He wanted to surprise him.

Finally, he had a finished product. And what a product it was. No one could ever mistake this for any kind of real place. From the entrance, one could see Fuuto Tower, a gigantic windmill turn in the distance, and the landscape is dotted with other Earth landmarks, as well as some from other worlds and places as found in the Enterprise databases. The lava plains of Vulcan, the Great Domes of Qu'nos, the cliffs of Undalar on Bajor, and dozens of other landscapes and locations from other worlds. Overall, it was quite the undertaking for someone that had never even left his hometown before. But, as fond as he was of his town, he was sure there were others that felt similarly.

However, that didn't yet address what his purpose in all this was. A large motorcycle course, with a few subdivisions for difficulty levels. The highest level course was both long and a little treacherous, with jumps, tight turns, and obstacles that come along with no warning like falling rocks and slick spots. He did leave all the safeguards on, so injury is unlikely. The lowest level course is a short and simple banked oval.

On the day he's ready to debut it, he's posted a couple of signs, in places like the halls of the guest quarters, next to the Ten Forward doors, under the console of the other holodecks. "Motorcycle Races! Holodeck 2! 5 pm!" Short and sweet.

On arrival, people are going to find Shotaro looking quite proud of himself, and a line of motorcycles of various types and sizes and a console set up so if someone doesn't see what they prefer they can generate it. From motocross bikes, to vintage World War 2 models, your classic chopper, and some sport bikes. There was also one or two from oher worlds that sounded cool. Each was poised with helmets and gloves perched on the seats. But off to one side was a particularly interesting matched pair.

Closed to Philip
He tended to drop in on Philip unannounced. He'd even started letting himself in like he lived there. Sorry Clint. "Hey, Partner. Time for you to find out what I've been doing." He was glad he had an opportunity to surprise him. As often as they shared consciousness at home, that would make it pretty difficult. Any secret from Philip had to be a secret from Shotaro too. But since they hadn't been Double in a while, that made it easier.

"You think you have." He took the bike over to the starting line. A race wasn't something he'd done before, but it can't be any harder than chasing down a bus. Or fleeing Dopants. Once both bikes were in position, the countdown was going to start.

Philip followed pace with his own bike. Once in place, he swung one leg over and started the ignition.

Three. Two. One.

Shotaro took off like a bat out of hell. He knew he had to get an early lead on Philip or he would lose a lot of ground quickly. Trying to stay on the inside curves was his plan for trimming off time and adding distance.

Of course Shotaro knew what he was doing. Philip trailed behind from the very start. One thing he had that Shotaro lacked, though, was his reckless streak. So maybe he pushed his bike a little faster than the recommended top speed. It was the holodeck, there were safeties, it would be fine. What mattered was that he managed to catch up.

Only once did Shotaro give up the inside curve, and that was just in front of a slick of oil. But overall, he was glad to be in the wind again. Time to see what Philip made of that.

Philip took that opportunity to zip behind Shotaro as close to the inside curve as he dared. He barely skitted around the oil slick, managing to calculate the trajectory he needed just in time.

Now that he had concrete evidence that his partner was quite possibly insane on a motorcycle, he needed to change things up a bit. He threw a bit of his own caution to the wind and went a little heavier on the throttle. That was what the safeguards were for, right? So he could ride like they were Double when he was just a regular human.

Yeah, totally. No need to worry about this sharp decline in terrain that Philip has decided to leap, rather than actually riding down like a normal person. Nothing can go wrong.

Nothing except your partner who did take that like a normal person trying not to get squished at the bottom.

"Oi! Look out below!" He probably couldn't hear him. But he yelled at him anyway. He jerked his out of the way so there was a clear space for Philip, again giving up prime ground.

Philip grinned as he came back down. Feeling the wind in his face like this was incredible. It had been so long, right now he was just about the happiest guy in the world.

Maybe next to Shotaro, that is.

They remained neck and neck for the rest of the course, despite Philip's best attempts at out-maneuvering Shotaro.

And at the end was an old-fashioned straightaway, no tricks, no bullshit. Shotaro put his head down and opened up the throttle all the way.

Vroom vroom. Philip kept his head down to reduce drag as they went into the final stretch.

In the end, it was close. It was so close that he wasn't even sure who'd made it across first.

Fortunately, photo finishes were something that Shotaro had prepared for. There was a bright lighted sign with each of their names and their times. Philip's name was flashing.

Philip had won by a hundredths of a second. Shotaro shouted indignantly, but he didn't look too sore about it.

Pulling his helmet off, Philip grinned at the sign. "This was an incredible idea, Shotaro."

Shotaro replaced his helmet with his hat. "Haaah~ You beat me at my own course." But he was glad he enjoyed it. He crossed over to Philip's bike and put a fist out.

"Better luck next time, Shotaro." Philip bumped his fist into Shotaro's. "This was a brilliant idea on your part."

He couldn't help but grin. Not only was he glad he found something Philip had enjoyed, but he'd been able to get everything together, despite his usual aversion to technology like this. But hell, he'd gotten used to the Memory Gadgets and whatnot just fine. He could deal with this.

"You should make a track," he told him. "And remember, a normal person needs to be able to run it."

Oh, don't worry, Shotaro. The wheels were already turning.

"How long did this take you?"

"About three weeks," he admitted. "It was about a week for me to get how the programming worked, and the last two weeks were all details, details, details." So in Philip time, that probably translated into about 3 days. If that.

"Impressive. I'd have expected the average human of our time period to take a bit longer to become acclimated to such a radical change in technology, but there is something to be said for full immersion."
