His expression is only a little rueful, though, and his smile's genuine.

It's refreshing, here, to meet people who don't actually take him with the cynicism and suspicion that's the general usual reaction to him in the Long Night. But to him, learning things he needs to know, meeting people, forging bonds, are all there is that matters to him now.
