When the man winks into the middle of Ten Forward, something strange happens...

He doesn't react badly; doesn't look around in confusion, but he does glance around with mild disinterest. He doesn't ask where he is, doesn't panic, doesn't... well, do much of anything, really.

Instead, he just walks over to the windows to stare out at the stars.

There are very few people who don't come in and gape at their surroundings. It makes the man interesting to John. He crosses over the window to with his glass if whiskey in hand.

"Something tells me this isn't your first space rodeo," he comment and sticks out his free hand, "Lieutenant Colonel John Sheppard."

The name rings a bell in John's head. He's heard it somewhere and it's going to niggle at him for days until he can place it.

He shakes the others hand firmly. "Yeah, this is a whole other galaxy for me. Are you an explorer?" He thinks this may account for Orlin's calm acceptance of a space ship.

John shakes his head a little. "Apparently there is a guy out there who likes abducting people from their own galaxies. He's not my type of guy." Frowns a little. "No idea what technology he's using to do it. I don't believe them when they say he's got god like powers."

"Why, have you met some gods?" Raised eyebrow. "I've met Asgardians and they definitely aren't gods." To anyone who has never left earth, he would sound like someone who has been to one too many sci fi conventions and is a conspiracy nut.

John looks up sharply. He can almost hear 'what humans might call gods'. "Are these beings your brothers and sisters?" he can't help asking. Even though he's in an entirely different universe, he's still careful not to mention the Pegasus Galaxy or Atlantis just in case someone finds a way to his universe and comes gunning for Atlantis.

John groans inwardly, this guy is really good at not giving a straight answer. "What planet did you originate from? What's you species?" Okay that term is likely to give offence but he doesn't care anymore. Knowing his luck this guy will turn out to be another of his mortal enemies.

John is very good at hiding his impatience, there is a only the smallest tic of frustration around his mouth. "Let's just say I need to know if you friend or foe. If you are a replicator, I am not going to be doing any welcome jigs for you."

He had a very different welcome in mind for any replicators that dared to cross his path.

"They are self replicating machines." John isn't overly fond of how the food comes out on this ship. He really thinks the food dispensers need a new name. "They can appear like humans." There is a hard look in his eyes as he pushes on. "They can infect us with nanites and turn us into them cell by cell." Or kill them. Elizabeth had died because of them, and her death was never for from his thoughts.

"That's what they all say," John says with a wry grin. Their ability to mimic a human is what makes them so dangerous, until they are under a scanner or make a move, they can slide seamlessly into a society. After the wraiths they are John's least favourite people.

"We met them on a planet, and they took exception to the fact they were no longer the Ancients favourites."

"No one wants to, even the wraith." The replicators had been made to fight the wraith after all.

John remains cautious about giving the secrets of Atlantis up. It's location is secret, for a good reason. "Have you heard about the lost city of Atlantis? They spawned the legend of it on earth, it seems that when they left their home, earth made a great second home."

"That's a good question." John rubs at his chin. "I've met a few of them, warships lost, ones who struck out alone, but for the most part, they're gone from our corner of the galaxy." He doesn't know whether to be glad or sad, some of the ancients he's met have been less than lovely.

"What's left they are scattered, divided, leaderless." And yes he did just quote Lord of the Rings.
