Marika has been studying. She's set checklists to pop songs - You're (Not) the First has become a source of what to do in those few precious seconds when the oxygen is leaving your suit - and she's memorized abbreviations and telltale positions and indicator lights.

In short, her brain is fried. This isn't stuff and forget like a school test, this has to live in her bones, it has to be added lines just short of spinal reflexes, so she's taking a break.

So, instead she's found the fencing salle and a reasonable (and blunt) copy of her sword and is drilling.

If you know where to look, you can see the other fighters as ghostly shadows outlined by blocks and footwork.

Percy really doesn't have the patience to do drills alone, he gets bored far too quickly. He prefers to practice with real people, so he's approaching Marika with a friendly grin. The list of people who know how to use a sword on the ship is really small. "Hey, I don't suppose you could do with a sword fighting partner?"

Marika is nearing the edge of her own ability to work at it usefully herself. Much longer and she'll start getting sloppy and drilling bad habits, not just patterns, with repetition.

"That," would be great," she says grinning back, "As long as you don't expect too much. I know just enough to be dangerous and unpredictable."

Percy takes a pen out of his pocket which isn’t very sword like. The second he uncaps the pen, it turns into a sword. “Don’t tell anyone that my pen can do this, I reckon they’d take it off me.” He’s seen most weapons locked away for ‘safe keeping’.

“I’m out of practice,” he confesses.”I still remember how to swing the sword, but not much else.”

"That's very cool," says Marika here eyes not leaving the pen-sword, "And I think I can keep it a secret. The freedom to choose what you say and do is a real freedom after all."

A pirate's freedom to be exact.

"What's up!" Yuna was always wondering around and she didn't often stay in one place for very long unless she found something to entertain her.

She enjoyed talking with Marika about many things and seeing her skills with the blade was interesting as well.

Yua was sitting on the ground with her knees pulled close to her chest. She had gotten used to things on the ship but she'd been getting lonely as of late.

"Yuna! Hi!" calls Marika as she swipes some of her sweaty hair out of her face, "Not much really. How about you?"

"Nothing exciting."

Yuna smiled excited to see the girl at work. "What are you fighting?" Training was something that Yuna did often and it was one of the few things she could relate to with others.

"It's supposed to be a pattern for three attackers, without ranged weapons. It's only really any good for dramatic faked fights though - anything serious and someone would have shot me with a laser or a safety round by now."

Not that safety rounds are actually safe, but they won't put a hole in a ship and that makes them safe enough to use. Not much point in repelling borders if it leaves you leaking air and unable to get past light speed.

"Got cha." Yuna smiled her head falling slightly to the side.

"It looks like fun. I'm always a little worried to practice here. I feel like I am going to break something."

"Hmm. That's probably the right way to think about," admits Marika, "There should be reinforced sections though - for weapons testing or dangerous goods or things like that. Maybe someone on staff could let you know if any of those spaces are available?"

Skills don't just sit and wait for you to pick them up after all. They have to be practiced.

"I supposed I can ask. I just don't think.." She paused.

Yuna wasn't sure what to say if only because people didn't seem to want to believe her. "I want to practice magic but most people here don't believe in magic."

Marika considers that for a moment. Her sword dips as she stops focusing on her posture and more on Yuna's problem.

"Well, do they not believe that you can do things or do they not believe that it's magic?" she asks, "Because the second one might be a translation issue basically. If they want o call it something else, then that isn't really your problem, right?"

The first one either calls for a demo or is basically unsolvable.

"I don't know if they have a name for it." She winched trying to think of the best way to describe it. She lightly scratched her cheek trying to think of a way but it might just be better to show her.

Like, "Fire or Ice." She flicked her wrist and flames and crystals of ice painted the air from her finger tips. "I don't think it would be alright."

"Pyrokinessis, that's the fancy name for making fire or moving it," offers Marika, "There's probably one for doing it with ice too, but I don't know that. If you mention that you have pyrokinetic abilities - and other abilities too - that you want to practice without risking damage to the ship they might want to check how dangerous what you can manage is, or prove that you can do it, but they shouldn't just go around claiming that magic isn't really a thing."

Marika scratches at her cheek with a knuckle from her off hand.

"They seem a bit up tight about certain things here, and maybe the idea magic is one of them. I mean there's barely anyone with visible cybernetics on the crew, but I have a bunch on my crew at home. There's these sort of subtle social stigmas here that no one talks about and I think we only start to bump into them because we're from so far outside of what they expect."

'We' in this case mostly being Q's additions to the Enterprise, and not just the two of them here.

"Yeah. Though I can do more than just fire and ice." She smiled purple tendrils surrounding her in a blink before she appeared a few steps away with a smile. "I have a few skills I want to practice so I don't lose them but my world has monsters and thing to fight. I can't just to that on this ship and some of my skills, well. I don't even know how to explain them."

Yuna found the wall near the door and pressed her back against it with a smile. "It's just a little confusing. Some people I've talked to when I mentioned magic looked at me like I was crazy."

"If it's like back home most of what people think of when someone talks about magic is, well, it's trickery at best," explains Marika, "Or so subtle that no one can tell if it's real or not. That sort of thing it might have left issues in their culture. I know that if I was going to have to explain being able to do things like you can-"
Instead of hypothetically leaving it as an ace in the hole and then giving none answers when questioned.
"-That I'd probably skip magic as a reason unless the person knew me really well."

"I guess so but that is what we define as magic. It is the flow of energy that we then manipulate and use. Reshaping it."

It wasn't so complicated but Yuna hadn't ever needed to explain it.

Ubiquity makes things awkward sometimes.

"It sure sounds like something you want to keep in practice with," agrees Marika, "Especially when you're able to do things like what you've shown me just now."

"Yeah. I've found ways to do so safely. I don't know." She looked over at Marika with a smile. "I might just be over worrying."

Yuna often worried to much but she might as well just try and practice for now and see if anyone see's fit to stop her from doing so.

Marika gives a little shrug.

"Space is big and they talk a lot about being explores. Being ready for something strange to happen just makes sense to me."

On the other hand, Marika also grew up with a bugout bag by the door and her Mom had viable antitank weapons in the closet. She might not be the person to look at for a 'normal' response.

"That's true. I guess I'm still not used to it." Yuna's fingers laced behind her back with a smile.

"Space, I mean."
