Xenoanthropology

[personal profile] chaotica 2015-09-30 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
Those who report to the Xenoanthropology class will find four PADDs (enough for all students) on the teacher's desk with a note displayed on each:

Class #1 meets elsewhere.

Below is a series of symbols. They appear hand-drawn, and are intricate enough that it's difficult to believe they might be letters. The common theme is squares, but there is a subtle curve gradient. Investigation, and twisting the images around, will yield the fact that they may be arranged in something that's almost a complete circle, missing a segment, except for some lines and curly bits that don't really line up with anything. Further investigation will find that the lines that don't line up with anything consist of two different symbols, set in a pattern that reads around the outside edge of the arc. Even further investigation will yield the fact that those symbols, translated into binary, turn into a room number.

If one notices that the arc corresponds to a map of a certain deck on the enterprise, one may also notice that the room number in question would be in the missing segment.

A room number that is a holodeck.

Good luck with the puzzle.

The holodeck is open, and inside is a balmy summer's night, a starscape above clear enough to see the spiral arms of the Milky Way. A fire burns in the middle of a field. Cambridge is reclined, making s'mores.

Alex started at the symbols, stared at the other students, and really prayed there was someone here better at this than him. Half the reason he was in here was to try to learn how to learn other languages, and he had no clue where to start.

He poked at the symbols, brow screwed together.

Alec pokes his head into the holodeck and then wanders completely in.

He's been looking at all the various classes, though he hasn't signed up for very many of them. This one got him curious for several reasons. One: Cambridge is teaching it and he finds Cambridge interesting (be afraid) two: Xenoanthropology is interesting and he's curious to see how Cambridge will teach it. Especially considering that some people on the ship aren't from Earth. Three: the puzzle.

As soon as he saw the note and the puzzle he just sort of shrugged wandered out and then asked the computer where the man was on the obvious assumption that where ever he was, the class was.

Cambridge checks his watch.

"Two and a half minutes after class start," he says. "Which is the amount of time that it takes to walk from there to here, with a brief pause to check my location on the computer. Congratulations on your shortcut."

He doesn't get up. And isn't about to start teaching immediately, either.
element_wizard: (I know something you don't)

[personal profile] element_wizard 2015-09-30 03:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"I should have teleported, clearly," Alec said dryly. "There weren't any instructions that said you had to use the PADDs to find your way here."

He wandered over and scrunched his nose up at the s'mores. Someone doesn't like them.
chaotica: (18)

[personal profile] chaotica 2015-09-30 03:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"No, there weren't," he says. "And if I required it, I would have simply left my combadge somewhere inconvenient."

He doesn't trust people to follow instructions.

He crosses one leg over another.

"Were you even signed up for this class?"
element_wizard: (green scarf)

[personal profile] element_wizard 2015-09-30 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Following instructions often times happen to other people in Alec's point of view.

"No. I'm crashing. Possibly. I'm just curious, really. I mean saying what a class is about is quite different than actually seeing what the class is about. It depends on the teacher and everything to make it worthwhile," he explained. "And you're going to give a much different class than say... I don't know... if Picard were to teach it. Or a Vulcan... or a Ferengi."
chaotica: (21)

[personal profile] chaotica 2015-09-30 05:17 pm (UTC)(link)
He'd actually give all three of those a try. Apparently Picard does have an interest in ancient archaeology. But he'd sit in the back and avoid as much as possible any personal interaction with the instructor. Also he's known some fascinating and complex Vulcans in his time, and any Ferengi willing to give up enough of their time to teach for free would probably be a strange specimen.

"And my presence is an asset or a liability?"
element_wizard: (mouth covered)

[personal profile] element_wizard 2015-09-30 05:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Alec would too, if only for curiosity's sake.

And to watch Picard change colors having to deal with him.

Tilting his head a bit, he gave Cambridge a thoughtful look over. For a moment he thought about going over exactly why he thought Cambridge would be a good teacher -which was a detailed sort of analysis about how the man clearly wanted people to succeed on their own merits and figure things out on their own which would be better in the long run and show that they're smarter than they think they are, but decided against it and go more shallow.

"I'm not sure yet. You'll put up with me, I think. You'll probably figure a work around disabilities, too." Then cheerfully he added, "And you're interesting!"

Sometimes it's easier just to act like the teenager he really is.
chaotica: (23)

[personal profile] chaotica 2015-10-01 04:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"I could see you decide to give a stupid answer," Cambridge points out. "Kindly don't treat me like I'm stupid." He's not going to press it, though; he's not that concerned over what Alec thinks of him.

The sound of low chanting drifts over a nearby ridge. Cambridge checks his watch.

"Just on time," he says. "They'd better hurry up and solve the puzzle, or they'll miss half the ritual."

Not that holodeck programs can't just be rewound and played again.
element_wizard: (Ghostly moon)

[personal profile] element_wizard 2015-10-01 05:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Alec tilted his head briefly. "I don't think you're stupid. You're probably one of the few people on this ship who could handle me actually being me. But sometimes it's important to keep up appearances."

He drops it though when the chanting starts and instead looks up at the sky to see if he can actually figure out where he supposedly was. And if they were on Earth at all. Just because it looked they were on Earth...
chaotica: (01)

[personal profile] chaotica 2015-10-01 05:12 pm (UTC)(link)
They aren't. This is a fairly obscure little planet that hasn't developed to warp travel yet, tucked away in the far reaches of the Alpha Quadrant. Further out on the spiral arm of the Milky Way than Earth. Cambridge picked it because of an interesting aspect to their culture, one that's showcased tonight. He calls it a ritual though that's something of a misnomer; he's really hoping that the people here mistake it as being for religious purposes, which is totally and hilariously incorrect. However, it does, fascinatingly, mimic a lot of things that look like religious iconography to humans.

It's a test of observational skills, and an example, and a way to get them to start thinking all at once. Cambridge plans that this be a very hands-on class. He watches Alec's observation of the stars, curious to see what he'll conclude.
element_wizard: (b&w thinky)

[personal profile] element_wizard 2015-10-01 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
One problem, or not, is that Alec isn't from Earth even though he's spent a lot of time there. So Earth stars wouldn't look very familiar to him in general. Even if they were on Earth, he might not be in the same time period as people would expect the stars to look like now.

Then he sees the moon...

Welp.

That made it easy.

"So, where are we? It's not Earth. I don't know its stars, but I do know what its moon looks like. And that's not Earth's moon."

"Does it matter where, galactically?" he asks. Interested to hear the answer; in this case, he would generally say that it only matters in a limited way. The isolated position of this planet, without many close neighbors, matters. The fact that it's further out on the spiral arm of the galaxy also matters, but to a lesser extent; the galaxy is large enough that one would have to be rather further to truly be a backwater. But the fact that it isn't on a major route and isn't close to any homeworlds of important species in the quadrant is certainly important. Also the fact that it lies generally close to the fuzzy edges of Federation territory, rather than being in a position to be claimed by Klingons, or Cardassians, or Romulans, who care less for the Prime Directive.
element_wizard: (just a bit uncertain)

[personal profile] element_wizard 2015-10-01 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Possibly... I think... I mean... if it depends on if it has anything people would be interested in. Even if this world does have a space faring civilization... it'd be easier or harder for them to get in contact with other races which would mean it would be easier or harder for them to get certain resources that they might not have here and need or want. So, their technology would develop differently."

Alec comes from a world with multiple cultures and multiple technology levels. So, it's entirely possible that this world could have space faring people for all he knows.

And for all he knows, Cambridge is the sort of person that would play with their expectations that it is a primitive world.
chaotica: (23)

[personal profile] chaotica 2015-10-01 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Cambridge is absolutely that sort of person.

"Decent answer," he says, "fairly low on assumptions. However: given how much you know about this galaxy, even if I did answer your question, would the answer mean anything to you?"
element_wizard: (I dunno)

[personal profile] element_wizard 2015-10-01 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Alec figures, but he's not going to say so. It's one of the reasons why he likes Cambridge.

"It would depend on how you answer it. And perhaps 'where are we' wasn't the best question to ask considering, as you say, I don't know much about this galaxy without cheating or doing research," he said with a shrug of his shoulders.

His version of cheating is to pick it out of the mind of an alternate of his who is familiar with the galaxy.

"It was just a reflexive question."
chaotica: (21)

[personal profile] chaotica 2015-10-01 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
"Congratulations; you have therefore already realized that I'm going to be very annoying about everything reflexive that is asked or done in this class."

If it can even really be called a "class" in a formal sense. Cambridge doesn't really like grading tests. Or grading. Or tests.
element_wizard: (King?)

[personal profile] element_wizard 2015-10-01 07:26 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a blink.

"I don't think it's annoying. It's probably one of the few things that are going to keep me interested and focused."

Alec's dyslexia gets in the way of a lot normal classroom learning for him which makes it hard for him to focus. He tries but it's hard. This is different enough and Cambridge is interesting enough to make it easier for him.
chaotica: (18)

[personal profile] chaotica 2015-10-02 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Mm?" Cambridge is watching a shooting star. "You have an impediment?"

Which is probably useful knowledge, as a teacher.

...the last time Cambridge taught a class, his teaching evaluations were so poor that they never asked him to again.
element_wizard: (Maybe)

[personal profile] element_wizard 2015-10-02 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm dyslexic," he said with a shrug.

Learning disabilities aren't a thing in his world - as in they exist but the cultures are still at the point of believing that Alec isn't working hard enough to read or write and if he did that, he'd be fine. So, he's never actually had any real help managing it.
chaotica: (Default)

[personal profile] chaotica 2015-10-10 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Well, I do demand a fair amount of reading from my students, so that might be annoying."

He doesn't apologize for being demanding. He can be a tyrant of a teacher.
element_wizard: (I dunno)

[personal profile] element_wizard 2015-10-10 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
"You wouldn't be the first teacher to do that to me," Alec said with a bit of resigned, but wry grin.

Alec would be highly surprised if Cambridge didn't turn out to be demanding and wonder if he'd become a pod person or something like that.
