(Open) The Stranger

Tasha hadn't want to scare anyone - or worse - have their pity. She'd been here on some nights before, but always in disguise and making it a point to watch, but not interact, with anyone. Also, she didn't like to admit it, but she loved make-up. Not the kind that Deanna or Beverly wore to bring out their features. That kind of make-up wasn't for her. It didn't feel right on. She didn't like extra attention regarding her appearance; a holdover from Turkana IV, she supposed.

But make-up to disguise? To conceal who and what you were and be able to become someone else? She had an incredible love of that. She justified her enjoyment by its usefulness as a skill, but it was more than that. It was a chance to be someone without the burden of duty or a past. Someone more normal - unless the part called for something else.

The risk of discovery also played a big part in both the thrill of the challenge and the growing irritation at her self-imposed isolation. Tasha justified it easily. She might disappear at any moment - or maybe even drop dead - because "dead" was still her official status, though Picard had assured her the wheels of bureaucracy were getting a firm push regarding all that. Starfleet's reluctance was understandable with all the strange happenings onboard the ship, but it gnawed at her patience. She didn't want to upend anyone's life, but she missed them! It would also mean opening herself up to stacks of unfinished business, too, but she was tired of avoiding her friends - even is she still thought keeping her distance might remain the best course of action.

At least her insistence on isolation had gotten her caught up on as much security information and protocols a civilian had access to. Well, a civilian and a cadet. It turned out the Academy hadn't cancelled her alumni access. There wasn't much dangerous in that, but "not much" wasn't "nothing" by a longshot. She'd have to talk to them about that.

Tasha's tired of keeping to herself and making Aggie feel like she's rooming with a crazy hermit. Tonight, she's keeping her "disguise" to a hooded sweatshirt. It's time to go Ten Forward, to stop being someone else, face what, if anything, comes of it.

"Been here just long enough to get bored," she replied. "Nice enough people, but... I'm used to more things happening. How about you? What sort of universe did you come from?"

"Ooops! There's some egg on my face!" She made a self-deprecating face briefly. "Sorry about that. I mean, this place is truly lovely, and Captain Picard is a great guy. But... I've just never gone this long without someone trying to kill me since I started hanging out with my best mate." She tilted her head. "So... what sort of complications?"

"Probably," she nodded. "I'd really love to meet this Q fellow to give him a piece of my mind."

She snorted into her drink. "Not bleeding likely," she spat back. "He doesn't scare me. I've met worse than him, and told them exactly what I think of them, so I'm not going to back down from some person who named himself a letter. Who does that, anyway? What's his real name, something like Humphrey Dildrison, and he was so embarrassed he just said, 'no, my name's Q. No one ever gets to mention that name!'"

"So if he wants to kill me and can just blink and make it happen, then he can kill me and there's nothing I can do about it," she replied. "So I'll make sure if he does that, he'll bloody well remember me."

Lucie glanced around in the silence.

"So... those complications must be pretty... er... complicating. If this is still a better topic than them."

"Oh," she said. Then she glanced around, and back at Tasha. "Oh," she repeated with growing understanding.

"Wait." She paused, putting things together. "You used to be. But you still think the Captain's awesome, so it's not like you were removed from service for something you did wrong. So..."

Then the word "hell" hits her.

"Did you die?"

"Or at least everyone thought you did," Lucie noted. "That's... gotta be awkward."

"Lucie Miller," Lucie offers. "Nice to meet you, Tasha. Let's see... you're from around here... I'm from early 21st century Earth, by way of everywhere else in time and space."

"Yep!" Lucie offered brightly. "Me and the Doctor, we ride around in his blue box, jumping through time and space, having adventures and helping people." She sighed. "You can see why enough time here in one place and I'm starting to get bored."

"Look, I don't mean to insult it or anything. It's got a great captain, and a great crew, and it's beautiful. But I'm used to killer aliens and robots chasing after me, and murder mysteries, and so on. I've spent months here, and I got trapped underground once in a situation with rock-aliens, but that was about it."

She sighs, clearly frustrated. "I mean, don't get me wrong. It's not like I go looking for trouble. Not exactly. It's more like... the Doctor and me, we go looking for people to help, and trouble tends to find us. It's a bit exciting, you know?"

She glances around. "And when you've got a policy for, 'let the anomaly finish,' and that anomaly is Q, well, I think you'll find we'll be old and gray before a guy like that is done."
