Talk like a pirate day - this isn't how it was at all (open)

Sam actually lived during parts of the golden age of piracy. These people's teeth are far too well tended, they smell better, the rum is a lot less... dirty, and who in all the hells ever talked like /that?/

But ok. So the pirate outfit is actually better than the stupid indian ones. And there's rum. Rum makes so many things better. Sam is wandering down the halls here and there, quite steadily, despite the bottle of rum being two-thirds gone, with three parrots having adopted 'him', and a couple more perching on the ornithopter that rolls behind Sam.

"Also it's harder for other countries to invade farther away lands because the gods in those other lands are going to be stronger than the gods that are further away from their home."

"Huh, interesting take. Back home, whatever gods there are quit fighting for their lands a long time ago, if they ever did. Now they just let their followers fight amongst each other in their names. Granted, they do plenty of that."

[reincarnshaman]

"Admittedly some of the older gods have faded away. But those with worshipers are still strong. And then there are a few others that are just..." Trever blinked a bit at the memory of a god. "Strange."

"Got to say, it's an interesting thought. Where I'm from, most of the old magic is pretty well gone. Just a few traces left. Definitely nothing like any gods actually showing up, except maybe in the very oldest stories."

[reincarnshaman]

"The gods don't actually show up, they're already there. One of them owns the largest multinational companies in the world and possibly other things..."

Another one is trying to court Trever. It's weird.

"Yep, definitely doesn't happen where I'm from. Interesting."

[reincarnshaman]

"Yeah, that's what I've gathered from a lot of people I've talked to."

Speaking of talking to... "Oh... heh. I'm Trever."

[immutablysam]

"Pleasure's mine. Sam."

[reincarnshaman]

Tilting his head towards the cat, he added, "Her name is Veena. She says you don't smell completely human."

[immutablysam]

Sam gestures to the ornithopter. "This is Bub." Sam crouches to offer a hand to the cat again, in proper greeting and acknowledgement species-wise.

"Seeing as you come from a place where the gods still walk around, suppose it wouldn't be that odd to hear someone whose dad found the Fountain of Youth. Nothing else all that inhuman. I've just been about longer than most folk."

"The fount of youth. Huh. I've heard stories about it, but never actually the fact that anyone's found it. It's supposed to be in Fairy or the shadow lands."

There are still some things that are stories in Trever's world.

"It was in America. Gone now."

[reincarnshaman]

"What happened to it?"

[immutablysam]

"Most folk never knew it was there. Folk drained the swamps, cut back the trees, and laid down trails in hopes the railroad would follow."

[reincarnshaman]

"Huh. That's not something that would happen in my world - it sounds like a sacred space to me. And we don't bother sacred spaces if we know what's good for us. The closest equivalent I can think of is that a large chunk of Germany is a hole in the ground."

[immutablysam]

"We made a point of never telling anyone where it was at. The last thing anyone wanted was a longer-lived Napoleon or George. So, how'd Germany get a big hole in it?"

[reincarnshaman]

"No one is exactly sure. It happened a couple thousand years ago. But a lot of powerful beings were involved and now... things just... don't work right there. It's a huge forest there, plenty of good land and all, but resettling it has proven utterly useless. I think the longest recent expedition lasted about two years. And only nine out of a hundred people came back. Out of those nine only three were capable of coherent conversation," Trever said.

"And that one was backed by one of the most powerful individuals alive!"

It speaks volumes about Sam's character as a born explorer and adventurer that 'he' gets more interested by the second in the description, as if pondering a great vacation.

"Your Europe sounds a lot more interesting than mine. Germany I knew was still licking its war wounds and trying to figure out airships."

[reincarnshaman]

"I suppose it is kinda interesting."

People do vacation there! But not very long. It's very pristine and very eerie. But perhaps less so for someone like Sam since he doesn't have any magic.

"We had a war about fifty odd years ago. That's how my mom's parents met."

[immutablysam]

The magic, of course, is part of what makes it interesting, after decades spent trying to search out the final remnants of magic in Sam's world!

"Huh, fifty years between wars. Half of forever."

[reincarnshaman]

That's true! And it'd be interesting to see what would happen if someone with no magic visited there.

"For some people, yes. But we've got people with long lives and long memories too."

[immutablysam]

"Given the gods and all, I suspected so. It'd be interesting, in itself, to talk to some other folk who've been around a couple centuries. Just my Dad to talk to at home who gets the perspective. Between the empires, I don't think the world back home has managed to go more than a couple decades without a new war. Just finished a big one four years back, and some folks're already agitating for a new one."

"Most of them are annoying fucks that you want to just bash their heads into a wall."

Trever, as Sam can see, is clearly very respectful of his world's gods.

[immutablysam]

That much is very clear.

"Yeah, that sort of thing is part of the reason we kept the location of the fountain a secret. Lots of folk no one wants to have around for centuries."

[reincarnshaman]

"Ah... if only we had a choice in that matter. It seems like the older people get the more of an ass they become," Trever said with a roll of his eyes.
