Talk like a pirate day - this isn't how it was at all (open)

Sam actually lived during parts of the golden age of piracy. These people's teeth are far too well tended, they smell better, the rum is a lot less... dirty, and who in all the hells ever talked like /that?/

But ok. So the pirate outfit is actually better than the stupid indian ones. And there's rum. Rum makes so many things better. Sam is wandering down the halls here and there, quite steadily, despite the bottle of rum being two-thirds gone, with three parrots having adopted 'him', and a couple more perching on the ornithopter that rolls behind Sam.

"I spent a bunch of time in Africa. Smart birds."

[magneticxman]

"Really? That's pretty cool. They are really smart. They're supposed to live a long time, too. I wonder if they're real?"

[immutablysam]

"Could be. They act real, anyway. And never been around one all that long, but knew a couple traders with parrots that said something like that."

[magneticxman]

"What were you doing in Africa, anyway?" She didn't really know much about Sam yet, but she wanted to change that. Sam was an interesting person and they seemed to have more than she expected in common.

Plus the sex was phenomenal.

"Mostly exploring. Made a few friends here and there on the inland. Didn't much like the north end."

[magneticxman]

Lorna thinks about her time in Egypt and makes a face. "No, the northern part isn't my favorite, either. Was there an island a bit north and east of Madagascar named Genosha in your world?"

[immutablysam]

"Nope, would have been there. No place by that name, though there are some islands up there. Mostly pirate havens or slaver way stations in my time."

[magneticxman]

"Maybe it's one of the slavery islands. They used mutants as slaves even until my time." She can't hide the anger in her voice when she thinks about it.

"That'd make sense. No mutants about in my time, far as I can tell. Still, it'd suit the history."

[magneticxman]

"What are you, then?" She'd assumed mutant, but the timeline was a little off for it. "Were you not born with your abilities?"

[immutablysam]

"I was, but it was because my Dad found the fountain of youth. He and my mother went for a swim when I was on the way. Far as I know, other than my dad, I'm one of a kind."

[magneticxman]

"it must be lonely," Lorna said, her head tilted curiously. "To be unique. I know I felt awful about my hair until I met other people like me."

[immutablysam]

Sam shrugs. "I talk to my Dad now and then. We don't always get on, but he gets what it's like, anyhow. Glad you found other folks like you. From the bits you've said, sounds like good people."

[magneticxman]

"They were, are, just people. Good, bad, and indifferent. I did have some good friends, but unfortunately being born with super powers doesn't automatically make someone a good person."

[immutablysam]

"Been my experience, usually giving someone power does about the opposite of making them a good person. A few exceptions, but only so many."

[magneticxman]

Lorna nodded and sighed. "Yeah, that's a fact. I was lucky to fall into a good crowd at first."

[immutablysam]

"Sounds like it. So there's lots of folks with those kind of powers where you're from?"

[magneticxman]

Lorna winces a little as she thinks about it. "The numbers go up and down. We suffered a pretty big. . . well there was a genocide, then my sister magicked away the majority of the rest of us." Including her, but she got better. "I think our numbers are growing again."

[immutablysam]

"Genocide?" Yeah, with what's going on on the frontier, and the things she sees as cultures encounter each other, it makes sense. "That must be some magic."

[magneticxman]

Lorna simply nods and takes a deep breath. "So do you like birds or do they just like you?" It was best to change the topic, because no good would come of talking about Genosha or M day.

[immutablysam]

"I like all sorts of animals when I'm not hunting. Got to know enough of 'em, I can usually get the curious ones to come and pay greetings."

[magneticxman]

That was a charming mental image. Lorna smiled widely. "They say animals are a good judge of character."

Which was when her bird decided to finally absorb her lessons. It squacked out a string of profanity quite loudly, which sent Lorna into a fit of laughter.

"Then there's this lot, who have it in mind to drink, and cuss, and maybe learn how to get a poker game going when they get back."

[magneticxman]

"They're my kind of birds," Lorna said with a grin. "I've been trying to get the bird to cuss all day."

[immutablysam]

"Fair warning, once you get them to start, the trick is getting them to stop again. The others'll pick it up."
