A line formed between Fatima's eyes. And curiosity won out over her pride. A rare victor in her life, but whatever.

She opened her notebook, fishing around in her bag for a pen.

"I'm sorry," she said. "Could you back up a second? What do you mean by 'Tower' exactly?"

"The Tower?" Grainne's voice came out a bit hesitant, a bit nervous. It wasn't a place she liked to think about, at the best of times. "It was a place people were brought to. Like here, only..."

She looked around at their surroundings. "It was full of monsters. I am not sure if it were the beasts that roamed the place or us that were the monsters. Like the Enterprise, it was lost amidst a sea of blackness. And there were few places to go."

Now that she thought about it, aside from the relatively friendly but exasperated natives and the fact everything worked, it wasn't really so different a situation...

What a change simple attitudes have.

"I've heard it was once called the Tower of Animus by the natives in that universe, but they had all been dead for thousands of years."

Fatima nodded slightly, following along with the story easily enough. She had no mythological basis or backing for the name 'Animus,' but the rest of it sounded solidly like the multiverse.

"I see," she said, taking down a few notes in her book. "That sounds similar to my experiences in Zelien." She gestured vaguely to her drawing. "We were pulled in to a...compound. A campus, I guess. Lots of monsters."

Grainne listened, her head tilted and expression blank. Others in the Tower had said similar things about other places, but she hadn't really paid much attention then. Her own quandry took up much of her time.

"Yes. I've heard of other places like it. A facility somewhere in space had done the same, I recall someone spoke of it once. The Tower was a bit different, I think. Ruana had been the only survivor of the mistake that killed the inhabitants of that universe, from what I understand. She was unable to die." Horrifying, really.

"She went mad, and about... four years ago, she found a way to operate the machinery that had done that to her. Only, she had found a way to bring people from another universe in, so when she pulled at them, every single one of us had their universe destroyed in the same way."

Honestly, she's surprised at how easily it's coming, when she had been crying so hard just telling Diarmuid of what had happened there.

She began scribbling down notes, until one particular phrase stopped her cold. And then Fatima's gaze shot up.

For a brief moment, she actually let her guard down enough to look surprised.

"Wait a minute. What do you mean, 'every single one of us had their universe destroyed in the same way?'"

What COMPASS had done to its victims was unforgivable. But the idea of an entity capable of destroying universes like that? It was unfathomable.

"Every one who came to the Tower of Animus was a soul trapped in an automaton made to look like a body. The devastation on those worlds from the process of extraction," she spoke in a flat, emotionless voice because she didn't know if she could keep going without breaking down otherwise, "was absolute. Bodies had their internal organs torn out through their mouths, but did not decay. Birds had died midflight in the same way and crashed into windows. There was a young man who had spent months on his world after being brought to the Tower. He had said even the ground had no living organisms in it. The stars had been winked out in a flash of white light that permeated everything."

It was all a little too much for Fatima to process.

One step at a time, Tima. That's what her mother used to tell her. Start with the small things and let them add up.

She wondered how her mother would handle information like this.

With a deep breath, she thought up the first small thing she could think of.

"You're...an automaton?"
impossibilities: (Surprisingly)

[personal profile] impossibilities 2015-10-01 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
"No, not now." Grainne blinked, surprised. "Back then... yes." Which was a long story all of itself, but she waited for whatever question Fatima had next. It was a lot to take in, but then the Tower wasn't exactly easy to explain. Even easy explanations weren't when it came to Ruana and Zo.

This was why she had gotten mad at Lancer when he told her to use familiar references when trying to explain. That would have been misleading, at best.

It was very, very rare that Fatima Merali was at a loss for words. She liked to talk. She talked to fill the silence so she didn't have to reflect too much. She always had a snarky comment on the tip of her tongue, or a fact of some kind to make herself look smart.

But there were no words.

None. At all.

It didn't make any sense. And a very, very not-insubstantial part of her was pretty sure she didn't want it to make sense.

She was seriously regretting volunteering to teach this course.
impossibilities: (Sad/Look)

[personal profile] impossibilities 2015-10-01 12:05 pm (UTC)(link)
While the silence pressed on, Grainne's expression melted from surprise to a resigned regret. She had felt like a freak before after having been pulled place to place. The class had been like a beacon drawing her here seeking answers to questions about the multiverse that would shed light on her situation; compared to some of the people she had met, her experiences were very limited. If the Tower had been truly that bad that it left others speechless when she spoke about it, she now felt like a freak amongst freaks. It had been a mistake to talk.

"I'm sorry." She murmured, head down, holding the tablet she brought with her and standing up. "I shouldn't have come." There was no looking up or back as she raced out of the classroom.

"No! Wait!" Fatima tried to call after her. She tried to stand too, but it seemed her body was only going to give her one, her voice or her muscles.

And barely even that.

It was all so much to take in. Fatima thought she was used to horror, but she'd never ever imagined it on a scale so big. Not even in Zelien, where they'd subjected her to experiments in fear.

At least there she'd had the comfort of knowing her friends and loved ones back home were...fine.
