Alec gave her a bit of a wry smile, "You know how some people are older than they look? I'm sort of younger than I look."

"Oh?"

There's always one in every class: a trouble-maker. Kate's got an inkling this one's gonna be hers.

"Is that so?"

Alec honestly is not planning on be a trouble-maker beyond his usual trouble with reading and things. But he does try to be a good student whenever he takes classes.

At her expression he gets a sort of mix of frustration and sort of why do I even bother trying look on his face before shoving it away.

"Yes. I'm not human." The humor is gone from his voice. "My people mature emotionally at a slower rate than humans. I'm the equivalent of a human in their mid to late teens. Which I thought counted as youth."

"Oh."

She seems unfazed by the change in disposition, though she has noticed it. After so many years she should be accustomed to alien lifeforms looking so similar to Earth bred and raised, but it always sends her for a loop.

"Certainly. May I ask where you're from, Mister ... ?"

He bounces back a bit easily.

"Alec Troven. And it's called Tynara. It's kinda of a nobody planet. If you've heard of it, I'd be seriously surprised."

She's glad for his reaction. Miss Kate would never be indelicate on purpose, but seeing how he weathers his frustration and presents himself helps her get an inkling of the best way to teach him. She treats him with the same amount of respect as any other peer, despite his age.

"Pleasure t'make your acquaintance, Mr. Troven. I'm Miss Barlow, but you can call me Miss Kate if y'like."

She smiles warmly, and approaches his seat.

"I'm afraid I haven't heard of Tynara, but where I'm from we haven't even mastered automobiles yet, let alone travel off our world. You'll hafta be patient with me as I learn the differences between our societies. May I ask what brings you to my classroom?"

It's friendly curiosity, not an ounce of accusation to be found in her sweet voice.
