cridhe: (proud)

Cridhe smiles and offers a nod. "I am called Cridhe."

But, yes she's calming down a bit. Everyone else had been so kind in the end, but she had her doubts. She has seen the best and worst of humanity, the universe over.

"What do you prefer I call you? Miss Kate or Miss Barlow."

Because when people introduce themselves with their title, they tend to like to use it. She knows that much.

{OOC: I will backtag forever. Hope things get better for you soon :) }

[ooc: Ah, good! ^__^ Thank you, I think they are.]

"What a lovely name. S'nice to meet you, Miss Cridhe."

Kate has a sort of true kindness that comes from someplace deep within. It shines from her eyes, easy to hear in her soft, Southern drawl, and tempers her movements. She's not without her secrets, though. And when threatened, that kindness can go cold in an instant.

Cridhe's question causes her to pause for just the briefest moment. Should be an easy enough one to answer, but it's been a long time since anyone called her anything other than 'Kissin' Kate Barlow'.

"My students always called me Miss Kate, but then my students were mostly children."

She chuckles softly, rifling through a few papers on her desk before finding one to bring over.

"You can call me whichever you're comfortable with, Miss Cridhe. Do you know your English alphabet?"
cridhe: (vulnerable)

[personal profile] cridhe 2015-10-28 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Miss Kate it shall be."

Especially since she was being called 'Miss Cridhe'. And don't mind if she gets called that when they're not in school.

When asked if she knew her alphabet she frowns, which should be answer enough, but she explains anyway.

"I know over ten billion languages. But I have never had a need to read or write before since I was connected to the Mechanics.. The computers always displayed the translations I was making."

She needs to remember to not speak about her other form too much at the start. It can kind of mess with people's heads.

Kate nods, laying the piece of paper down on the desk in front of Cridhe. So she's from a future with computers like this one, then. Kate only hopes her brand of teaching measures up.

On the paper are the twenty-six letters of the alphabet, handwritten in both uppercase and lowercase.

"All right, then we'll start with the buildin' blocks. English has twenty-six letters, an' they can look different dependin' on whether they're written large or small. There's also cursive t'take into account, but we'll save that for another day."

She smiles, and goes into a little about the letters, the difference between consonants and vowels, and recites the list along with the helpful song most young students find easier to remember. Cridhe has such a lovely, melodic voice, Kate imagines the simple tune should be easy enough for her.

"D'you have any questions so far?"
cridhe: (wistful)

[personal profile] cridhe 2015-11-25 12:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Cridhe is an attentive student and a quick study. It doesn't take long before she's able to copy out the alphabet in upper and lower case - perfectly.

"Words are made by stringing letters together. But they seem to make different sounds as they're put together."

Which doesn't confound her, but it does. Why did English have to be the dominate language? It's so hard.

[personal profile] ikissdhimbck 2015-11-28 07:30 am (UTC)(link)
"That's right."

She's really rather bright, and Kate finds she needs little correction as they work together. She commends her for her good work, pleased as punch to see it.

"Let's take the letter A. Now, dependin' on the word it can sound like an A, ah, or ayh. All vowels are like that. Once y'start practicin' your words, knowin' which sound the vowel's gonna make gets easier. There's a pattern, and the other letters grouped with it in the word can tell you which pattern you're lookin' for."

In beautiful Victorian lettering, Kate writes out:
Day
Far
Cat

Each word represents the three vowel sounds she gave Cridhe, and she spends time explaining them, sounding out each letter, and letting Cridhe copy the words herself.
cridhe: (wistful)

[personal profile] cridhe 2015-11-28 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Cridhe sounds out the words. And as she does so, well, she's starting to realise the ways in which her translation circuit needs to be improved. Oh things are going to be so much better going forward.

Cridhe's writing is perfect block script - much like a drafter's font. Once they've worked through each of the vowels and the different sounds they make. (Really, 'E' what is up with you and going silent and having the power to change other vowels - but only sometimes?)

"So, is all of English like this? 'These are the rules, except for exceptions.' Because I think I will need an entire database just for the exceptions."

Well, it's how she logs information, so it's what she calls it.
ikissdhimbck: (Amused by you til the very end)

[personal profile] ikissdhimbck 2015-12-14 10:28 am (UTC)(link)
'E' is a tricky little devil, put on this green Earth to make an English author's life more difficult.

Cridhe, however, is doing rather well. Kate marvels at just how perfect her printing is already, and perhaps that's the moment she realizes Cridhe's more than what meets the eye.

"Sometimes."

She answers with a chuckle, aware of exactly how cheeky she sounds.

"It's a growin' language. What I'm teachin' you has already changed so much since my country split from its alliance with the English motherland. An' even before then, you'll find Olde English an' Gothic translations. What all that means is the rules keep gettin' amended as the way we write an' speak changes."

She looks sympathetic.

"It gets easier with practice. Some things can't be learned from a book, but come natural with a li'l experience."
cridhe: (consider)

[personal profile] cridhe 2015-12-14 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"I have plenty of experience. Time was, my translation skills were unmatched by any other. Only in very rare instances was I unable to translate anything. Then, I came here... I still pick up languages quickly enough. But, I never had a use for reading or writing before."

And certainly not a language as confusing as English.
ikissdhimbck: (Ponderin')

[personal profile] ikissdhimbck 2015-12-19 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Kate tips her head to one shoulder, the slimmest of crinkles at the corners of her eyes.

"So you've traveled quite a bit, then? Got a gift for other languages?"

It's gentle prompting at best, but the curiosity underneath is strong.
cridhe: (thoughtful)

[personal profile] cridhe 2015-12-19 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
She smiles brightly at first.

"Oh, I spent thousands of years travelling. I used to be able to translate for others."

She looks down at her fleshy self and the smile falters.

"And then I had this form. I didn't think of all I would lose."
ikissdhimbck: (Searching)

[personal profile] ikissdhimbck 2015-12-31 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
Kate's eyes brighten with curiosity and awe, her red lips parting.

There's a quick moment of confusion, and then something like recognition clears through the crisp blue of her iris.

"You're a shape-shifter?"

It's a concept she's only grown familiar with through her experiences with people who call themselves 'mutants', though she's read more than her share of tomes on the legends even before her own travels.
cridhe: (wistful)

[personal profile] cridhe 2015-12-31 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
Cridhe giggles softly.

"No. Well, I suppose literally, yes, when the Chameleon Circuit is working I can. If I told what I actually am, you would not believe me. But, let me leave it as, in my Universe, I am the most powerful creature there is."

Because no other sentient being can control and manipulate the whole of Time and Space.
