[Ten Forward]: Rooming Assignments | Round #15

Now that Dr. Crusher's medical team has cleared a sizable number of new passengers for ship-wide access comes a big day for them: the day they receive their official introduction to the Enterprise. It starts with a tour of the ship and some background to the situation, delivered by Chief O'Brien.

The tour covers the main areas of the ship, and a history of recent events, Q-inspired and otherwise.

Once the tour has wrapped up, it normally falls on Worf's shoulders to assign the new arrivals quarters and instruct them on the correct behavior and protocols needed for life aboard the Enterprise. They have been gathered together in Ten Forward, and are awaiting further instructions on how to proceed. Unfortunately, Worf is still unavailable, and so instead it falls on Lt. Junior Grade Baldwin’s shoulders to do so, just as it did last month.

As he has done this before, Baldwin has a speech prepared:

"The computer will instruct you on where all cleared-for-access decks are. You only have to ask where the area you are trying to get to is located, and it will give you clear directions. Do not visit any restricted areas. The bridge, engine rooms, transporter rooms, and all command centers are off-limits.

"With that in mind, there are a few rules you must obey before I give you your new assignments. One, do not discharge any weapon while on the Enterprise. Two, do not assault any other passenger aboard in any way; that includes injury, death, or violating their personal rights. Three, do not tamper with the operational procedures of the ship. Four, do not steal items or technology from the ship. Five, do not interrupt any official areas of the ship without proper authorization, and do not invade the privacy of other guest or crew quarters.

"Copies of the Prime Directive will be made available to all of you, and placed in each room. As you are not Starfleet officers, you are not obligated to abide by this rule; however, it is important you understand why we do.

Looking down at the safety of his PADD, he says, "Room assignments are as follows," before reading off the list of quarters, their location, and the guests who will be sharing them.

"I will remain here to answer questions," Baldwin says, managing to keep the reluctance out of his voice. "And the rest of the Security team will be standing by to escort you where you need to be."

The list is also displayed on a PADD, where people can refer to it if they need to.


[ooc: Open log for building CR with new roommates and meeting neighbors, "party post" style! Rooms are aligned the way they would be in a typical hotel: odd numbers on the left, even numbers on the right (so 0711 and 0713 will be next door neighbors, while 0712 is directly across the hall). There is a post in the OOC comm where players can connect with questions and find more details about the rooms themselves, so check in over there. If you need to ask security questions, or need them to swing by another thread, just put "Security officer, please!" in the subject line of your tag, and the mods will send someone to you ASAP. The tour given by Chief O'Brien is not open for tagging; you can assume your character had any basic questions answered. ]

The thing about cats is that they often seem like they can teleport. The thing about Veena is that she can actually teleport. Which is why there is suddenly a black cat in Thea's new quarters investigating Kit Kat.

The arrival of Veena peaked Thea's interest and for now the attempt at keeping hot cocoa down was forgotten in favor of the mystery cat. "Now how did you get in?" not knowing about the fact she could teleport. "Guess you followed me in while I was moving things around huh?" as she went over to check on Kit Kat. "Wonder where your person is?" as she petted the friendly enough cat,"And Kit Kat belongs to me! Well she did adopt me." as the kitten dove into Thea's jacket.

Sadly, Veena doesn't wear collars very well. She's very good at getting out of them and so she has no tags. She follows the kitten into the jacket with a very motherly air. When she sticks her head out, she has the kitten in her mouth like any other momma cat would.

And then she vanishes.

With the kitten.

"Ok, now that wins for sheer freaky!" as Thea got up (abet a bit shaky) as she pulled on her jacket to go kitten hunting. She was only hoping she could locate Kit Kat before another dizzy spell hits and fast, she was still not in the best of shape on pretty much every level at the moment.

Less than five minutes later there's a ring on the door. On the other side there will be Trever with a miffed Veena on his shoulder, her tail flicking back and forth rapidly and Kit Kat peering out of his hands.

"I told, again, you she's already adopted someone and you can't adopt every damn kitten on this ship. It's bad enough that you've dumped three on me."

"Mystery solved!" Thea cracked a rare smile these days as she accepted Kit Kat. "Hi Trever, I had no idea your cat could do that!" her smile showing no harm was meant or done. "And this little sassy kitty is Kit Kat, she basically adopted me."

"Hey, Thea. Sorry about this. Veena misses her kittens back home." He handed over the kitten with a smile. "And so Kit Kat told me. She says she likes your jacket very much. ... Well she said she liked her jacket very much. But thinks you should have gotten the other room."

He laughed a bit. "As for the teleporting? Believe me. It took me for surprise too."

"Its ok, at least I know what happened and its just Veena missing her little ones." as Thea petted Veena. "And I'm not shocked, Kit Kat took to my jacket right away." as the kitten hopped out of Thea's arm and reclaimed the motorcycle jacket. "Her brother should be around here someplace, Pocky adopted Oliver." she added.

He rolled his eyes a bit. "Honestly, part of me is kinda glad they're not with us because six teleporting kittens is an insane handful."

Never mind the one of the six that can eat anything.

"She mentioned Pocky. She's better than him because she got you."

Veena accepted the petting with good cat grace as she only flicked her ears.

"If you'd like, I could do a quick examination on the both of them? I'm a licensed vet back home. The three that Veena adopted were a bit on the scrawny side and had fleas, so I've been trying to check in with people who adopted some of the cats to examine them."

He also got the fact that Kit Kat's human was sads, but Trever's not going to flat out say that right away. But he can definitely see that she's not looking good.

"Not a bad idea actually, Pocky and Kit Kat just took to me and Oliver for some reason." as Thea scooped the kittens from the floor and her jacket. "Oliver found them and they just took to us like crazy, strange but the markings were what struck us." as the light hit the markings on the kittens. "Red and green arrow like shapes, got us thinking they are related. And yes Kit Kat is a favorite candy bar." making a weak joke.

Walking over to the table, Trever said, "Cats are like that. They adopt people. Veena adopted me. I had to move places because the dorm I was staying at didn't allow pets."

Getting rid of kittens that teleport is very difficult. Said cat jumps off of Trever's shoulder and sits down on a chair where she stares out at the room.

"I honestly can't say anything about people's naming practices. The kittens Veena adopted are Devourer of My Enemy's Hope, Princess Pringles and Patches."

He says that with a perfectly straight face, too, though there's laughter in his eyes.

"So there's a reason Kit Kat and Pocky just took to us?" Thea was beyond curious. "And I have to admit someone with a salt habit could think of a name like Princess Pringles." she weakly giggled. Pocky let out a mew as well, he was just as worried about his human (Thea's brother). "But why our jackets as roosts? I knew cats love clothes but why our jackets." she asked.

"Yeah. Likely because they're cats. Though I named Princess Pringles in honor of my cousin Ceilidh. She has an owlet named Princess Sticky Bubblegum and her favorite doll is Princess Stabbity. She wants to be a warrior princess when she grows up. She's five."

Which explains the princess thing.

He picked up Pocky first and started running his fingers over the kitten lightly, murmuring something as he did so. His fingers glow softly as he ran the spell over the kitten. It doesn't hurt but it would make the kitten sneeze.

When he finished the spell he said, "The jackets are very important to you, aren't they?"

"Long story about Oliver's and its not my place to tell." Thea nodded, as a younger sister she would protect Oliver. "But I just love the look of motorcycle jackets and figured why not get one." she confessed. But she did giggle over Trever's cat name stories,"Little ones are like that, I wanted to be Robin Hood a one time."

"They can when you like certain things and so obviously it must be theirs because it's so important. Also it probably smells a lot like you since you probably wear it a lot."

He looked down at Pocky. "Is that so though? Yes, I suppose Thea should have a talk with your human."

To her he said, "How's your brother doing? Pocky's worried about him."

Thea nodded,"It makes sense since I don't think I wore any jacket besides that one for ages." She took a breath,"Long story short: Oliver's not in a good place mentally and that's all I'll say." since she and Oliver had become protective of each other more than ever. And she quickly changed the subject since she was not ready to talk beyond a select few,"How could you tell what he was saying?"

"My knack is the ability to understand and be understood by animals." Trever said simply.

"He said that his human wasn't eating and was confused as to why his human wasn't doing so. Because he liked eating and so his human should like eating too because eating is fun and yummy."

Thea nodded, it actually made sense when she got to thinking about it. Of course Kit Kat had to chime in about her human not sleeping or eating plus being so sad when kitty was so happy. "We're both going through some rough things."

It does explain how he was able to find Thea's place and why he was arguing with his cat.

He glanced at Kit Kat and then raised his eyebrows. "She's noticed. She doesn't understand why you're so sad when she's so happy. You should be happy because she's happy. Also, that you're not sleeping or eating either."

"Oh Miss Kit Kat, your human is not in a great place either. She knows your happy but its just hard for her right now." Thea let the kitten nuzzle her arm. "Its ironic but she's gotten me to smile for the first time in what feels like ages."

Trever smiles gently. "Animals are really good at that sort of thing. There's a reason why hospitals use therapy animals. I've read studies that show that having a pet is good for your health. I wouldn't say they give you unconditional love, but they aren't bothered by our human problems."

He held up a finger. "However, you can end up hurting them if you don't take care of yourself. If you stop eating she might stop eating too or any other host of problems. They can sense your moods after all."

Trever is trying to coach this in terms of helping the kittens and not 'you two need to go see the doctor about this whole depression thing and get yourselves checked out' because he's not a human doctor after all. Even if he does know that people not eating is bad.

And he is telling the truth because the kittens did just tell him about Oliver and he's not met the man.

Trever was basically acting as another kick in the getting help wagon, something Thea honestly needed to hear. "They have totally noticed, they go into happy kitty overdrive when we're at our lowest." she mused. But she did whisper,"We're working on it." meaning the stuff in their heads.

"They want you to be happy. If only so you'll play with them and feed them and scratch them. They're kinda selfish that way. Come here Kit Kat, lemme check you over."

He reached out for the kitten.

"And I believe you are."

As Kit Kat and Pocky traded places (and basically acting like 4 legged versions of their humans) Thea nodded. "They will do almost anything for attention from moving into our jackets to batting at pants legs." she observed. "And are jackets ok for short term cat beds or can it be a full time thing?"

"They're little kids, essentially," Trever said, scooping Kit Kat up and rubbing her belly.

He ran his fingers over her doing the same thing as he did for her brother before answering.

"Cats will sleep anywhere. One of the old barn cats back home loved sleeping in the horse's feed bucket. It's probably better to get them their own beds though. You want to use your jackets after all, right? And you don't want to deprive them of their beds," Trever said bopping the kitten's nose.

"They should settle down and find their favorite spots soon enough."
