Closed for Chekov and Captain Kirk
Chekov was quite pleased by two things. The first one being that Captain Kirk was also here on this ship and the second being that the they were roommates now. He couldn't help but find it a bit awkward as well sharing a room with the Captain and wasn't sure what to really expect.
The only thing he didn't like was that he still didn't get to do any work. He hated being idle and he really wanted to know more about the ship. Then there was that urge to prove himself.
Right now he was playing with the PADD trying to hack into a few things and testing to see how tight the security was on this ship. This was the problem when he got bored. He ended up getting into trouble. He really wanted to see how updated this ship was and how much the system changed if at all. It didn't help that his crew was known for not exactly following the rules and guidelines Starfleet had set.
With the curiosity getting the better of him, he quickly zoned out around him and set to work trying to break into the security. He didn't plan to do anything once he got in, it was just more looking. He wanted to see how good this security team actually was.

One thing he doesn't have on him, that he wishes he did, was back on his ship. The miniature of the Kelvin that he keeps on his desk in his quarters.
He finds the room easily enough, and inputs the code for the door. When he goes in, he doesn't see Chekov right away, but then catches sight of him hunched over, furiously inputting things into a PADD. He's known the kid long enough to know that he's damn good with computers and he's---probably up to something.
Jim makes his way across to where the ensign is sitting and peeks over his shoulder.
"Hey, roomie whatcha up to?"

Oh Chekov, was quite tempted to make changes here or there...not changes that would hurt the ship, but ones that they could have benefited from. Before he allowed himself to do such changes he wanted the actual permission for it. When he did finally look up from the PADD he had a look of boredom mixed with disappointment.
The another thought crossed his mind...."So what does that mean for us? Are you still a Captain here and I'm an Ensign? Or are we civilians?"

He reaches out, flicking the PADD back to look at a segment of coding, and making a face. That looks all of useless. Whatever, not his ship.
Then Chekov asks that, and Jim's shoulders slump almost imperceptibly. They've been through a lot. The last two years have been far from easy, so much has happened. So much has been lost. He feels he gained a crew and a family, but after everything with Khan and Marcus---there are monsters out there in the dark, in their own ranks, and Jim isn't sure his little ship and brave, bold crew are up to it. He'll never say that out loud, though.
He shifts to sit on the edge of the bed with him, giving a crooked smile as he reaches up to clap a hand on his shoulder reassuringly. "Mr. Chekov, you are still an ensign, and I'm still a captain. I'm just not captain of this ship. We've been put through our paces more times than most, I'd say, and we haven't been found wanting."
He squeezes his shoulder gently. "But I'm gonna be honest with you, I'm getting really sick of this time travel business."

"It just doesn't feel right being here... After all the stuff we've been through. And I just wanted simply explore space and the various worlds it has to offer...not the craziness we had experienced... It seems like we have to keep proving ourselves. "

"I know." This isn't what they signed up for. Not in the least. He lets his hand drop down, and clasps his hands in his own lap. "Chekov, you've got nothing to prove to me. And whatever these people on this ship think, it's nothing. I've seen you in action. I've seen you take on a job you weren't sure you could handle and perform far above any expectations I might have had." He'd written out reports for what he remembered while he was recuperating, but much of the crews actions had not been witnessed by himself during their freefall to Earth.
"You took on a big job. You took care of the ship, the crew, and you didn't falter." He hasn't said it, not in so many words, because it's difficult to get out. There was so much he didn't get to say, to everyone, when he was stuck in Main Engineering. "You made me proud to be your Captain."

"I'm proud to work alongside you, Captain," Chekov managed to say after a while. "You're one of the first to really believe I could do this. Even back at home...no one gave me the support you gave."
As much as he loved Russia, he had to do everything on his own and it was through his own determination he came to Starfleet.

He knew he told him that it was sabotage that ended up crippling their ship, but he didn't know how long it would be before Chekov accepted that and relieved himself of that guilt.
"Now, I know that's not true. You're young, sure, but you've got everything Starfleet looks for and then some. Spock believed in you when Bones called you out on your age, you remember?"
Bones had been so grumpy and skeptical about a 17 year old on the bridge, but his concerns were unwarranted. "You're going to be a fine officer. Who knows, maybe you'll end up with a ship of your own one day."
