Talk like a pirate day - this isn't how it was at all (open)

Sam actually lived during parts of the golden age of piracy. These people's teeth are far too well tended, they smell better, the rum is a lot less... dirty, and who in all the hells ever talked like /that?/

But ok. So the pirate outfit is actually better than the stupid indian ones. And there's rum. Rum makes so many things better. Sam is wandering down the halls here and there, quite steadily, despite the bottle of rum being two-thirds gone, with three parrots having adopted 'him', and a couple more perching on the ornithopter that rolls behind Sam.

"That Klingon who manages a lot of it, Worf, I think, saw me draw once, when it looked like one of the newcomers was startin' a fight. He said I could either hand over the knives til I joined security, or spend some in their lovely brig there an' then. Even before he went to see about the fight. Not that a lot happens here I've needed 'em for, but still."

"The brig isn't so bad." And again there's a blank look of incomprehension. "And just because not a lot of things happen here where you might not need them isn't a reason to give them up. You never know when something might happen."

"I don't much like being cooped up. And when things happen, I disarm the Klingons." Sam grins, glancing up and to the side as if recalling a pleasant memory. "Or start grabbing table settings. Works."

"Neither do I. It's driving me crazy not having stepped on some real ground in several months now," Trever said.

"And yeah, disarming or table settings work, but it's nice to at least have something by your side so you don't have to grab a weapon. You can lose precious seconds having to find something."

Sam shrugs. "I know a couple dozen unarmed styles. I prefer my knives, but it ain't worth gettin' the locals riled up."

"Really?" his eyes brighten. "Would you be interested in sparring sometime?"

Sam shrugs, "Sure, sounds like fun. Been using the holo-deck things for training, but all for finding some sparring partners. Been considering teaching a class or two, in that thing they were mentioning."

"I'll bring my brother along," Trever said, "We were also thinking about teaching classes."

[immutablysam]

"Sure thing. What sort'a classes?"

[reincarnshaman]

"Melee combat basics for me and ranged combat basics for him."

Which is quite a bit different than self defense.

"Good things for more people to know. Especially if we're likely to be boarded more often. We can hope."

[reincarnshaman]

"Yeah. I'm not sure how many people would take it. Some people feel that being able to defend yourself is better than knowing how to act in a fight or use what's around you," he said. "Not that knowing how to defend yourself isn't a bad idea. But good offenses are important."

"Good to know both. Sufficient offense negates the need to worry about defense, often as not."

[reincarnshaman]

"Exactly! And the best way to win a fight is to end it as quickly as possible... if the fight is unavoidable."

"And sometimes you don't want to avoid a fight. Just causes more problems later."

[reincarnshaman]

"Which most the time people don't seem to understand!" Trever is so happy right now that he's found someone who gets his way of thinking. "If you don't shut it down now, it'll come back later with reinforcements or whatever."

The feeling seems to be mutual. Sam has run into plenty of pacifists and diplomatic sorts here. Only so many that 'he'd' really consider fighters.

"Exactly. Sometimes you need to send a message, sometimes you need to just put down the wrong sorts while you can."

"Better to cut off the rotten part before it spreads to the rest."

Trever really has tried diplomacy, but he doesn't always get it. He understands the need for it. He just hasn't figured out how to do it just yet. But he's working on it. Being second in line to the throne requires a certain amount of diplomacy.

Sam can be diplomatic, for a very certain type of diplomacy. 'He's' an explorer, used to running into new cultures - not all of which were ever going to b friendly, regardless of approach. Sometimes, being ready for anything really is necessary.

"Cut out those bits, or make an example of someone so the others are more willing to talk. You get it. Not sure why more folks don't."

Trever was raised a McCallum. Their idea of diplomacy is leaving you alive.

"I think because people are taught that violence isn't the answer. That violence is bad because people get hurt or die. If you're busy making examples of others then nothing will get done and society will break apart." Trever said. "At least that's what I've gotten lectured about."

"Violence ain't the answer? Who in all'a the hells teaches that kind of garbage?" That's apparently not a lecture Sam has gotten.

"My teachers at school, my father's aides... folks like that." Trever's gotten the lecture a lot. But again, he does need to learn diplomacy.

"Huh, didn't get a lot of that. Maybe it's the times. Where... or when, are you from?"

[reincarnshaman]

"I'm from Eire, 2015. My da's king though so..." he shrugged, "What about you?"

"Been a long while since I was there. But, all over the place, 1819."
