She shook her head. "Never mind," she said. "An eccentricity unique to my world, I guess."

It had been fucking fantastic going to middle school in 2001. Her name had already singled her out as the 'weird kid.' Add to that the greater context of a world hating all things Middle Eastern? Plus thirteen-year-olds?

Bad combination. Toxic combination.

"Which is, I guess, a good place to begin. Why don't you tell me a little bit about your homeworld?"
1st_starfighter: (Stalwart)

[personal profile] 1st_starfighter 2015-09-30 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Alex nodded slowly, and swallowed. "Okay. That would suck." He had been the outcast and nothing like what she might have gone through for that, but he had just enough empathy to imagine how bad it could be and he winced.

"Well, ah, I don't know a lot. I was born on Earth, and raised in a trailer park in the back side of California and became by mother's right hand man, fixing anything and everything that broke down. I never left the place until 1984. Then, well, I was recruited by aliens to go save the galaxy against other aliens."

He smiled sheepishly.
dust_of_life: (Uncertain)

[personal profile] dust_of_life 2015-09-30 03:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Fatima didn't even have to try to look composed. The idea of aliens were second nature at this point.

"Well," she said, "I guess our worlds have some things in common. I mean, I was born on Earth and in California too. In 1989, for the record. But, see, my version of Earth? Not so much with aliens. We have other things though, that you might not. Like...werewolves."

And she paused to gauge his reaction.
1st_starfighter: (Oh Wow)

[personal profile] 1st_starfighter 2015-09-30 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
"Yeah? Cool!" He nodded. "Werewolves? Wow." he grinned at her. "I met an alien race who we nicknamed werewolves, but I've never met the actual real life human type." His eyes were wide with wonder.

"What are they like?"
dust_of_life: (Tired)

[personal profile] dust_of_life 2015-09-30 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)
His enthusiasm reminded her, in a strange way, of Auntie Diana. Auntie Diana always had the ability to see things as a new opportunity or adventure. She also saw the best in people.

Which was why she was probably dead.

Fatima let out a soft sigh. "Horrifying," she replied neutrally. "They can dismantle a humanoid body in about three seconds. With three swipes." She demonstrate the first, across the shoulders. "Here." She did the second, up and down through the navel. "Here." And the third cut a diagonal from shoulder to hip. "And here."
1st_starfighter: (WTF?)

[personal profile] 1st_starfighter 2015-09-30 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Alex winced, then nodded slowly. "Okay, so, not good at all."

He nodded again, swallowing. "In your experience, was there any way to tell if someone was werewolf before they, ah, wolfed out?"

He paused, then went on with a second question, confused. "Also, do they actually become wolves?"

[personal profile] dust_of_life 2015-09-30 04:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Uh, there are certain supernatural ways to detect Garou," she said. "But I don't think you need to worry about that here. I've spent two years in the multiverse and haven't seen any. Besides, just because a person can hurt you, doesn't mean they well. Especially when we're all kind of in the same boat. No pun intended."

Also, Fatima didn't actually know said methods.

"Really, the biggest problem you're going to face in terms of unique multiverse problems involve time."
1st_starfighter: (Default)

[personal profile] 1st_starfighter 2015-09-30 04:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Alex nodded. "Makes sense. Most people probably are just the same, inside, despite differences."

He blinked at this. "How so?"
dust_of_life: (Calm)

[personal profile] dust_of_life 2015-09-30 04:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Best to let that sunny sentiment about people being the same pass. Again, she thought of Auntie Diana and could only grimace internally about it.

As for the rest, she turned to her diagram on the board. "Well, let me start by introducing you to Dean." She gestured to the first Dean in line. "I met this young man about a week or two into my arrival in the multiverse. We hit things off pretty well. Had a lot in common. We could talk to each other in the same language. But, eventually, as often happens in the multiverse, he returned home."

She frowned a moment before adding, "Think of it like Q sending someone back where they came from."
1st_starfighter: (Really?)

[personal profile] 1st_starfighter 2015-09-30 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Alex listened, watching her as she explained.

"Okay. That kind of thing happens too often here."
dust_of_life: (Default)

[personal profile] dust_of_life 2015-10-01 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Exactly," she said, pleased that he seemed to be following along.

It would make the next part a little easier.

"So, Dean went away. Then, a few months later, I saw a man with the exact same face." She pointed to the second stick figure.

The asshole.
1st_starfighter: (Default)

[personal profile] 1st_starfighter 2015-10-01 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
"That sounds like it is both confusing, and like that time things didn't go well." Alex felt himself tense a little, wondering how bad it had been.
dust_of_life: (Amused)

[personal profile] dust_of_life 2015-10-01 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
"You could say that," Fatima replied dryly.

There didn't seem to be much of a need to get into the nitty gritty details of what fell out between her and Dean. That wasn't what this was about. The 'asshole' would suffice.

"A few months after I met this Dean--I call him Dean 2.0--I next encountered this one." She pointed to the third stick figure.
1st_starfighter: (Default)

[personal profile] 1st_starfighter 2015-10-01 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
"So, wait, one came in, then left, then a second one came in, then left, and then a third one came in as well?" He whistled.

"That seems like an awful lot of Deans."
dust_of_life: (Happy)

[personal profile] dust_of_life 2015-10-01 06:31 pm (UTC)(link)
"Actually, it gets more complicated than that," Fatima admitted, looking a little proud to have something new to offer this guy. Her other students, as it turned out, knew more about the multiverse than she did.

Not a great thing for someone with an ego as fragile as hers.

But that was for later sulking.

"Dean 2.0 and Dean 3.0 actually overlapped in their stay. And when Dean 3.0 left and Dean 4.0 arrived, Dean 2.0 was still there." She made sure to point to each of the appropriate stick figures, to make it clear as possible. "The multiverse isn't quite as linear as we are."
1st_starfighter: (WTF?)

[personal profile] 1st_starfighter 2015-10-02 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh?" He cocked his head to the side, then stared as she explained things, mouth open.

"Ah. Well, that's..." He shook his head.

"Sounds very confusing to everyone."
dust_of_life: (Laughing)

[personal profile] dust_of_life 2015-10-02 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
She let out a rough, dry laugh. "You have no idea," she muttered. After awhile, she'd started being able to pick up on tiny eccentricities which differed for each of the Deans. But it was still always a little touch-and-go. Especially considering the fact that one of the Deans was constantly trying to hurt her.

"I haven't seen any sort of doubling here yet," she added. "But I've only been on this Hilton a few months."
1st_starfighter: (Oh Wow)

[personal profile] 1st_starfighter 2015-10-03 01:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Alex nodded, then laughed, shaking his head. "I totally think I am lucky o not have been through any of this. It sounds like you're pretty damn bad-ass to deal with all of this mess."

Alex nodded. "I've seen a few lookalikes, but they turned out to not be the same people."
dust_of_life: (Happy)

[personal profile] dust_of_life 2015-10-03 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Fatima enjoyed being considered a badass. It was always one of the things she was going for. Even if she wasn't intentionally going for it.

All part of that need to be treated like an adult.

She smiled slightly, trying not to puff up like a peacock too much. "And it sounds like you're taking this whole thing with remarkable stride."
1st_starfighter: (Smile 2)

[personal profile] 1st_starfighter 2015-10-03 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thanks!" He perked up. Alex, too, liked being thought of as someone who could deal with things. He grinned.

"Well, I'm starting to think my life is pretty much going to be one surprise after another, surrounded by stretches of absolute boredom." He chuckled. "Or sometimes absolute terror. It changes from week to week."
dust_of_life: (Flirty)

[personal profile] dust_of_life 2015-10-03 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"I can relate," Fatima said, giving him a wry smile. That had been, nearly word for word, exactly how she described Zelien. Both there and after the fact.

She shrugged. "Is there anything else I can answer for you? This isn't exactly a formal class here. More just a primer."

Hence the name.
1st_starfighter: (Default)

[personal profile] 1st_starfighter 2015-10-03 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Alex smiled back and nodded. "It feels weird to be here, where so much time is quiet. But then, now I've got classes at least, and that could help."

He thought for a minute. "Have you cross through many places where people come from different universes?"
dust_of_life: (Annoyed)

[personal profile] dust_of_life 2015-10-03 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Fatima shook her head. "No. This is only the second multiverse I've ever seen. By far the superior one, for the record. At least, so far."

With an irritable sigh, she had to add, "There are a lot of people around here with more experience, if you need the advanced stuff."

A painful admission.
1st_starfighter: (Confident)

[personal profile] 1st_starfighter 2015-10-03 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
"Okay." He smiled to her.

"Nah. I was just curious about your experiences. Half the fun of taking classes is to learn from people who have been places I haven't. I was a Starfighter for a long time, and one thing i learned was to try to learn as much as I could. That way, you have a better chance of being prepared for new things." Alex nodded firmly.
dust_of_life: (Default)

[personal profile] dust_of_life 2015-10-03 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, she could appreciate the attitude. She'd been equally gung-ho on more than one occasion, especially in her first few weeks under the watchful eye of COMPASS.

In some ways, though, she'd become as bitter and as blase as she used to pretend to be, when she was just trying to earn the rest of others. It was a weird and twisty irony that she couldn't quite reconcile.

And now wasn't the time to try.

"A big suggestion I have would be to bone up on things like mythology and supernatural fiction," she said. "When you're in the multiverse, you learn that a lot more of those things are true and exist than you ever imagined."
