"Well, ah, I don't know a lot. I was born on Earth, and raised in a trailer park in the back side of California and became by mother's right hand man, fixing anything and everything that broke down. I never left the place until 1984. Then, well, I was recruited by aliens to go save the galaxy against other aliens."
He smiled sheepishly.
no subject
"Well," she said, "I guess our worlds have some things in common. I mean, I was born on Earth and in California too. In 1989, for the record. But, see, my version of Earth? Not so much with aliens. We have other things though, that you might not. Like...werewolves."
And she paused to gauge his reaction.
no subject
"What are they like?"
no subject
Which was why she was probably dead.
Fatima let out a soft sigh. "Horrifying," she replied neutrally. "They can dismantle a humanoid body in about three seconds. With three swipes." She demonstrate the first, across the shoulders. "Here." She did the second, up and down through the navel. "Here." And the third cut a diagonal from shoulder to hip. "And here."
no subject
He nodded again, swallowing. "In your experience, was there any way to tell if someone was werewolf before they, ah, wolfed out?"
He paused, then went on with a second question, confused. "Also, do they actually become wolves?"
no subject
Also, Fatima didn't actually know said methods.
"Really, the biggest problem you're going to face in terms of unique multiverse problems involve time."
no subject
He blinked at this. "How so?"
no subject
As for the rest, she turned to her diagram on the board. "Well, let me start by introducing you to Dean." She gestured to the first Dean in line. "I met this young man about a week or two into my arrival in the multiverse. We hit things off pretty well. Had a lot in common. We could talk to each other in the same language. But, eventually, as often happens in the multiverse, he returned home."
She frowned a moment before adding, "Think of it like Q sending someone back where they came from."
no subject
"Okay. That kind of thing happens too often here."
no subject
It would make the next part a little easier.
"So, Dean went away. Then, a few months later, I saw a man with the exact same face." She pointed to the second stick figure.
The asshole.
no subject
no subject
There didn't seem to be much of a need to get into the nitty gritty details of what fell out between her and Dean. That wasn't what this was about. The 'asshole' would suffice.
"A few months after I met this Dean--I call him Dean 2.0--I next encountered this one." She pointed to the third stick figure.
no subject
"That seems like an awful lot of Deans."
no subject
Not a great thing for someone with an ego as fragile as hers.
But that was for later sulking.
"Dean 2.0 and Dean 3.0 actually overlapped in their stay. And when Dean 3.0 left and Dean 4.0 arrived, Dean 2.0 was still there." She made sure to point to each of the appropriate stick figures, to make it clear as possible. "The multiverse isn't quite as linear as we are."
no subject
"Ah. Well, that's..." He shook his head.
"Sounds very confusing to everyone."
no subject
"I haven't seen any sort of doubling here yet," she added. "But I've only been on this Hilton a few months."
no subject
Alex nodded. "I've seen a few lookalikes, but they turned out to not be the same people."
no subject
All part of that need to be treated like an adult.
She smiled slightly, trying not to puff up like a peacock too much. "And it sounds like you're taking this whole thing with remarkable stride."
no subject
"Well, I'm starting to think my life is pretty much going to be one surprise after another, surrounded by stretches of absolute boredom." He chuckled. "Or sometimes absolute terror. It changes from week to week."
no subject
She shrugged. "Is there anything else I can answer for you? This isn't exactly a formal class here. More just a primer."
Hence the name.
no subject
He thought for a minute. "Have you cross through many places where people come from different universes?"
no subject
With an irritable sigh, she had to add, "There are a lot of people around here with more experience, if you need the advanced stuff."
A painful admission.
no subject
"Nah. I was just curious about your experiences. Half the fun of taking classes is to learn from people who have been places I haven't. I was a Starfighter for a long time, and one thing i learned was to try to learn as much as I could. That way, you have a better chance of being prepared for new things." Alex nodded firmly.
no subject
In some ways, though, she'd become as bitter and as blase as she used to pretend to be, when she was just trying to earn the rest of others. It was a weird and twisty irony that she couldn't quite reconcile.
And now wasn't the time to try.
"A big suggestion I have would be to bone up on things like mythology and supernatural fiction," she said. "When you're in the multiverse, you learn that a lot more of those things are true and exist than you ever imagined."
no subject
he paused, as he remembered some myths.
"Or not so cool. Huhn. I can see how that could be a problem."
He shook his head, then. "Seems like I have a lot to learn."
