[Sickbay]: Round Four Scans and Vaccines

There has been quite a lot of activity in Sickbay over the last couple of days. In addition to new guests arriving on the Enterprise, all of whom need to be cleared and vaccinated when necessary, there are the wounded who have come back from Alemar III and those looking in on them. Dr. Crusher has never been more glad that she isn't short-staffed.

While Lieutenant Worf and his security detail bring in the new passengers, Beverly ensures those recuperating have enough space and privacy. Beds may be limited, but nobody will be on the floor in her sickbay. For those who haven't been here before, Sickbay is fairly ordinary for a ship's hospital. There are no terrifying devices or humming machines you might see in a sci-fi thriller. The biobeds along the walls are equipped with biofunction monitors, but look fairly standard. Instead of silver trays filled with metal tools and sawblades, there are an array of small devices that look as harmless as cell phones.

As for the staff, they're all well-groomed and friendly. As a matter of fact, all personnel look harmless. Well, perhaps excluding the sun avatar, but Trance Gemini is as skilled as the Starfleet officers.

"All right, come in," one of them calls out as you enter. "Don't be shy. It's just a scan and a hypospray, nothing to worry about."

[ooc: Open log! For new characters (August and September apps), tagging isn't mandatory but ICly going to sickbay is. So if you'd prefer to skip threading with one of our doctors, you can handwave that your character got a clean bill of health and a shot and were sent on their merry way. For those who are tagging, we have Julian Bashir, Trance Gemini, and Simon Tam on deck, with Beverly Crusher by request only. So please specify in the subject line of your tag who you would like. For those returned from the Alemar III plot, if you are not requesting a thread with a doctor but would like your character open for visitors, put "Visiting Post" in your subject line, or specify if it's locked to specific visitors. If you would like more details about sickbay, here's the wiki page. If you haven't made your intro yet, you can assume the doctors will want to see your character shortly after they arrive, and backtagging is love!]

"I suspect I have to worry about that a bit more than you. But yes...especially since. Well. We'll have to talk later about that." He needs to know exactly what he can and cannot say to her, just as much as she needs to find out exactly what she can't say to them.

"I'd be completely happy with just the one myself. Right now it's...wait and see, mostly. It's not just other Starfleet officers he's abducting, it's people from the far past and future as well. It's...well, it's a spectacular bloody mess not even waiting to happen."

"Meaning?" Moving on that statement when he says it. Of course, when he continues, saying they'll have to talk about it later, her eyes narrow, but she gives a nod. Privacy, or at least some semblance of it, without anyone accidentally overhearing.

"And is Q around?" Although with Q, who would know... Might be, might not. Unless he made himself known, who knew. Well, that certainly put a bump in the path. "Although maybe I don't want him to be."

No doubt things could get even hairier. Jadzia gives a mental shrug, before those blue eyes settle on him. "So. I guess that means you can check me out?" Clear her.

That response gets a lazy half smile out of her. She had been in his place a few times after her side job. Sometimes she had to sit still longer than she would have liked. Injuries got in the way of just moving on.

"Well I'm not going to create a distraction for someone I don't even know," Marion says with a slight shrug. She's not about to cause trouble.

"'Sides. Ain't usually wise to upset the doctors." Her accent rolls out easily. Marion barely notices it is out until she finishes what she is saying. She isn't so happy with herself as she tries very hard to not talk with an accent but most of the time it's very hard to not sound like she's from Texas.

"Dylan," Marion supplies. If Marion knew that there was such a thing as a privacy ode somewhere out there? She would be very happy. As it is she is trying very hard to not hate every second she is in this sick bay. She hates not feeling secure.

Marion takes in a deep calming breath. She doesn't want to have a melt down over talking to someone about this. Hell, she talked to Commander Worf about this almost right away. This shouldn't be such a big deal.

"A few years ago I was forcibly infected with a... pretty ugly disease. It won't kill me. Hell, it gives me some pretty interesting advantages it's just... Problematic. From a logistics and medical stand point." She needs to just come out and say it.

"I'm a werewolf."

"It's complicated, of course, and I'd rather discuss it in private so we can't be overheard. Though I will warn you--our friend Gul Dukat is here, though he belongs to this timeframe and therefore doesn't know us." Like he said--complicated.

"I've not seen him myself, though he's popped up to speak with Captain Picard I'm sure. Most of the reports we've seen imply he prefers to bother the Enterprise crew anyway. We're all just pieces in whatever game he's playing at."

Julian nods, of course he'll be the one to get Jadzia up to speed, both medically and on the situation. "I'll get you cleared, no worries. It's just a standard examination." Before, her phrasing might have flustered him a little, but now he doesn't react to it at all.

The door slides open to sickbay, and Lucie pokes her head in. "Hellooo," she calls, nervously friendly. She gives a knock to the side of the doorframe, then glanced around before focusing on Dylan's location. "Hiii." She draws out the "Hi" just a few beats, almost singing the greeting.

As she steps into sickbay, it's clear she's carrying a vase of flowers. "Um, I heard you were going to be in sickbay for a bit, so I thought I'd bring you something to help cheer the place up."

"Shame," he replies, her smile making him tease, just a little. "Probably smart. But shame."

Not that he actually is planning to break out; he might resent being stuck here, but there's a chance that he's annoyed Trance enough already, after she'd told him off down on the planet for holding her up. He's personally of the opinion that he's wasting her time here in sickbay by being here fare more than he did down on the planet by being reluctant to let her treat him.

Trance appears to be of another opinion, and, particularly in this new, future form of herself, she's a little scary when she's mad. Like the lady says, not wise to upset her.

(He's seen her possessed body take Rommie in a fight, and that's something Dylan sure couldn't do if he tried.)

"Maybe we can fix the not knowing thing. I'm Dylan. Captain Dylan Hunt."

There might be those who'd tell him the use of the title is pointless here, but he's held on to being a High Guard officer as a key part of himself even after the fall of the Commonwealth and the loss of the whole rest of the High Guard.

He plans to do the same here.

He has manners. It's a nice thing to see when she normally ends up dealing with fellow werewolves who have seriously unreasonable sized egos or the publishing house who started picking up her books. Sometimes the people she has to deal with set her teeth on edge.

Not Dylan.

"Marion Scotts." She lets out a low chuckle. "Don't think my work would have been popular enough to last through to this time period. I'm.... a novelist."

Not just a writer but that is left unsaid. She doesn't usually tack on the other things she gets up to in any conversation. She might just refer to it as consulting which is hilarious given the last person she said that to saw her carrying her sword. "I just got here right after ya all had that.... incident Shepherd mentioned."

She notes her accent is out in full force. Might as well just give up and roll with the damn thing.

Explaining microbiology and modern medicine to someone whose medical science hadn't progressed beyond 'insert frog in mouth' was not exactly high on Julian's list of things he'd like to do today. Oh well. Maybe he can get away with a simple explanation.

"Vaccinations are medicines that are specifically created to help your immune system--which is what naturally fights off infection--develop resistance to the illnesses that the vaccinations are for. So when you start getting sick, your body already knows how to fight it, and you don't actually show symptoms."

That sort of made sense to Wan. Sort of. Maybe. It sounded like it should make sense, at least.

He remained wary as he continued his questions, "Will it hurt to get va- vasi- vas- that word?"
asklepian: (pic#6889756)

[personal profile] asklepian 2014-09-19 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh fantastic, he doesn't have to explain the concept of bacterial and viral infections.

"Not in the least. You may feel a slight pressure for a moment at the site of administration, depending on how closely you're paying attention, but we don't use needles at all."
raavashing: (Huh: When all of your flaws)

[personal profile] raavashing 2014-09-19 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"Why would you use needles in the first place?" Needles were for sewing and- "Is it like acupuncture?"

[personal profile] asklepian 2014-09-19 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Why he expected Wan to know about hypodermics is beyond him.

"Vaccinations are administered under the skin, usually. It used to be that to do so, we would need to use hollow needles attached to clean syringes--tubes that were pressurized so the medicine could be given without touching them. We use pressurized air to do so now."
raavashing: (huh: oh oh oh oh)

[personal profile] raavashing 2014-09-19 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Julian, you think far too highly of a man who would willingly stick a frog in your mouth if he thought it would bring your fever down.

"You use air to give people medicine?" That had Wan's interest and the wariness eased away into genuine curiosity. "I didn't know anyone here held the power of air. And I didn't know it could be used to heal."
asklepian: (pic#7045959)

[personal profile] asklepian 2014-09-19 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Please don't.

"Well, I don't have the power of anything, but yes, air can be used to administer medicines. It's the pressure that does the trick."
raavashing: (huh: And I would do it for you)

[personal profile] raavashing 2014-09-19 06:44 pm (UTC)(link)
He'd only do it if he knew it was the right kind of frog. They're found in mud pits.

"I don't understand. If you don't have the power of air, how do you use it to give medicine?"
asklepian: (pic#7459921)

[personal profile] asklepian 2014-09-19 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, but land on another planet, look for a mudpit, and find a frog and chances are it'll be toxic.

"Using this," Julian explains, holding up an empty hypospray. He presses the button on top, which releases a little hiss of air.
raavashing: (shock: what do you need?)

[personal profile] raavashing 2014-09-19 06:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Wan is not yet aware of this fact. Fortunately, he's also not a trained healer and would defer to others. It's only if Julian is stuck alone with him on a planet while also having a fever that he is in danger of getting an alien frog stuffed in his mouth. And what are the odds of that?

Wan leaned back at the hiss of air, eyes widening. He stayed there for a heartbeat, just enough to register what had happened, before leaning in and grabbing for the hypospray. He wanted to examine it and try it out for himself.
asklepian: (Default)

[personal profile] asklepian 2014-09-19 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Murphy's Law has survived well into the 24th century, so there's a good possibility.

Julian has no problems relinquishing an empty hypospray, so when Wan goes for it, Julian simply lets go.
raavashing: (smile: But I stay strong)

[personal profile] raavashing 2014-09-19 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Julian has made Wan a very happy man as he starts pressing the button on it to make the air hiss out. After a few clicks, he brings it close to his face and shoots some air a little too close to his eyes, forcing him to blink fast and shake his head to clear them.

What a wonderful toy you have relinquished to him, Doctor. Perhaps while he's distracted, you can get some basic readings done with a tricorder?
heartofasun: (Gold smirk)

[personal profile] heartofasun 2014-09-19 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well what can I do for you? Besides keep it confidential, which I will do of course." Marion wasn't her first werewolf. She had checked out Clay during the last examination sessions.

"I assume you'll need someplace private to change. Access to extra food and nutrients after? Would you like me to put in a recommendation for a private room?"

Trance did not make it a big deal. It was as if they were discussing the weather or the artificial gravity.

"You're secret is safe. Don't worry." This was going better than the time with Clay, who kept telling her he'd have to kill her if she found out. Trance had said that was fine.

Hello there, have the 26th century one! :)

[personal profile] osirian_doctor 2014-09-19 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Simon's spent a significant amount of time since he got approval to assist in sickbay familiarizing himself with the technology and medications used here. He's from a world where, in many ways, the technology is less advanced, although it's in this place's future.

They don't have anything like the tricorder Simon has in his hand, but he's a quick learner and he's more than confident in his skills as a doctor, new technology or not.

Simon's wearing his usual combination of pants and waistcoat under the lab coat that the medical staff gave him, but he looks just as professional as the Starfleet personnel in their uniforms.

"Hello," he says, when the man wanders over and sits on the edge of the biobed. "I'm Doctor Tam, I'll be giving you your scan today."

[personal profile] ex_old_man857 2014-09-20 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
No doubt he can see the questions brimming just there below the surface, but she holds her tongue. As they said, patience is a virtue, and she can be patient, for a time, anyway. But the mention of Dukat... And that he isn't aware of them. If it were someone else, Jadzia likely could find amusement in it, but it's Gal Dukat. There is no amusement there.

There is a slight look given at him, contemplative, but it's gone as soon as it arrives. It's a warm and easy smile that graces her lips. "Good thing you're here then. No unexpected surprises for a strange doctor."

But beyond that, he is a good friend, one she trusts with her life- has trusted with her life.
asklepian: (pic#7053853)

[personal profile] asklepian 2014-09-20 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Certainly not. Julian is even less amused than Jadzia is, potentially.

"None at all." He smiles back, still feeling relieved from seeing a friendly and familiar face--it's incredibly welcome. "Right then, shall we?"

Any doctor!

[personal profile] sheriff_bigby 2014-09-20 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
In the ages of fable and myth Bigby had never once been to a doctor. Since humanizing himself in some degrees, Dr. Swineheart had been the only doctor Bigby ever had reason to see and even then it was rare. He healed so rapidly there just wasn't a need, and setting his own bones was not something he was shy about.

Bigby wasn't afraid, he didn't get afraid (giant bean stalks didn't count, those are just wrong). It wasn't fear he felt as he sat there waiting for one of the doctors, it was apprehension, concordantly rising in intensity as the fall out of this appointment grew in his imagination. These were just mundanes, as outlandish and unbelievable as their technology was, they knew nothing of Fables as far as the wolf knew.

If their scans and whats-its and doo-dads could tell he was a wolf in human guise, it could be bad for him. Then again, if no one here even believed in the stories of the big bad wolf, maybe it didn't even matter. All he knew for the moment was that he was feeling so apprehensive about this that he was starting to literally sweat.
