Amy Pond's blind dating callouts have reminded Simon of the date, which is a good thing, since it also happens to be a significant anniversary for him and a significant day for Kaylee. Which means that he needs to find a present for her. Of course, most of these touristy places on planets tend not to have anything really worth buying; he'd learned that a long time ago, with that memorable lesson on Jiangyin, and he's never seen particularly much to dissuade him of that opinion.

He has learned, though, that Kaylee does like some things that he wouldn't, necessarily. So, he'd gone down to Pacifica to go shopping, and for the first part of the day, he can be found browsing the stalls in a market, considering things, rejecting things, and growing increasingly convinced that he won't find her a present.

For some reason, though, the large fake flowers that almost look real draw his attention. Normally, he'd dismiss them as tacky, but today, for some reason, he's admiring them.

Later on, he can be found sitting on a beach, still fully and rather formally dressed, reading from a PADD.

The one concession Simon's made to his surroundings is to remove his socks and shoes so he can wiggle his toes in the sand.

[ OOC: feel free to find him at either the market or the beach, just specify which! ]

Martha had been out of Glaxcin just long enough to start to feel like maybe she could have a normal life. For a definition of normal that involved working for UNIT against alien invasions and having the Doctor's phone number programmed into her phone, at any rate. Her weirdometer had been uniquely calibrated for a while.

Suddenly being in a bar was still at least a seven though. Not being able to remember how one left the pub was one thing, but this was rather the opposite. "Again? Really?" She sounds more... annoyed, than anything. If this place is anything like Glaxcin... she'd rather liked regular meals, once she got back to them.

But, time to assess. A quick glance down reveals that she's still wearing her own clothing. That was something, she definitely hadn't missed the Warden's incredible fashion sense. And her surroundings... no obvious danger. And viewports... "Space. Well then." It hasn't been that long, since the Doctor had just popped by. But still.

If this is your first trip to Sickbay, you may be surprised to see that it's a fairly ordinary-looking hospital. There are no terrifying devices or humming machines you might see in a sci-fi thriller. The biobeds along the walls are equipped with biofunction monitors, but look fairly standard. Instead of silver trays filled with metal tools and sawblades, there are an array of small devices that look as harmless as cell phones. As for the staff, they're all well-groomed and friendly — even the more unusual aliens.

If you're new to the ship, no doubt you've been escorted here by the security team. Nothing to worry about, the doctors just want to make sure you aren't carrying any viruses or are vulnerable to terrible space disease. Once you've been checked over — a quick scan from a tricorder and any necessary vaccines — you'll be free to go. Lollipops are optional.

"All right, step on in," one of them calls out as you enter. "Don't be afraid. It's just a scan and a hypospray, nothing to worry about."

Who: Inara and OTA
What: Inara reading, exploring the ship or even attempting to use the holodeck.
Where: all over the ship
When: Recently
Status: Open and Ongoing.
Rating: PG-13, just to be safe

Inara hadn't expected to find any sort of peace on the ship, not with knowing what she had waiting for her back home, if she was ever sent back. But there was peace; it was just there beneath her veins, and she had somehow managed to not be quite so skittish and most importantly, she wasn't so wary of those around her. She might have also found a bit of hope, and that was probably due to Kaylee and Simon, showing her that regardless of everything that there was still something out there for each of them.

Still, she's kept herself a little distanced from those around her but she's more relaxed. It shows in the way she carries herself, and the bit of tension that has left her brows and her hands that are loose and not drawn into fists that were ready at a moments notice to protect herself if needed.

She's spent a lot of her time reading in Ten Forward, trying to catch herself up with a history that was vastly different than her own. Sure, there were similarities but the Enterprise's Earth hadn't been used up and its inhabitants forced to flee. Instead they'd managed to almost wipe out humanity with a nuclear and genocidal war and then with the help of Zefram Cochran, managed to initiate first contact with an alien race. She'd made she she read all about that, along with books of politics and poems and wars. She read like a woman starved but she was reading to keep her sanity.

When Inara wasn't doing that, she walked, exploring the parts of the ship was permitted and if anyone talked to her, she was quick to reply with a smile and a greeting. She might also be found trying to figure out how to program something for the holosuite, something that reminded her of Sihnon but well, that wasn't exactly something she understood.

If you'd seen Simon during the crisis, you'd have seen a man working with the sort of dedication that keeps people working so late at night they don't sleep. A man practically living in the labs. He's been living through his work since he came here, and it had been good to have a project again.

Now, though, he looks lonely, as he walks into the bar. He'd dressed down, during their work in the labs, forsaking waistcoats for more practical garments, a light sweater replacing the button-down shirts. His dress now is more formal again: waistcoat, dress pants, a PADD under one arm. That's not unusual for him, but what is unusual is that he looks out of sorts, listless, staring more often into the lounge with a distant look on his fact than at his PADD.

(He's not looking out of the windows. Even after all these months he's still not entirely comfortable with just the windows being between him and the vast nothingness of space.)

Perhaps he should get out more. He does, in fact, hardly know anyone here beyond his patients and the people he'd worked with in Sickbay.

The cup of green tea on his table is, by now, rather cold.

Although the alternate timeline's Dr. Crusher has done outstanding work helping to combat the virus that turned so many of the ship's passengers into children earlier in the month, it's still Dr. Julian Bashir acting as the interim CMO, with all the duties and responsibilities that entails.

At least now there's only the number of children there should be, with the medical and scientific staff having succeeded in returning all Q's victims to their correct age.

Sure she had been plucked up out of Chicago in the middle of some damned important work by some alien with a cracked sense of humor. She felt that entitled her to a bit of righteous rage. She also felt that meant she could safely vent some of that rage in her usual work out forms.

Welcome to the future, Murphy. Where dojos are replaced by hologram room things and seven foot tall aliens were commonplace and ready to lend a hand in practice. She could take that in stride, hell after sparring with Valkyries and their chosen fallen she felt up to damn near anything. Fae Queens aside. Mab still made her shudder and not just from cold.

But when you go to hip throw an opponent their spine should not be fluid enough to slide out of it. Aliens were unknown variables and she hadn't been ready for that. She hadn't compensated for such a shift of weight and balance and wound up cracking the hell out of her right elbow and at least two of her ribs.

It wasn't an unknown pain, but it sure as hell was enough to sober her self pitying thoughts. She was here, so it was about damned time she found something productive to do with herself.

Right after she got her ribs tapes and elbow looked at.

Murphy checked the register and found a medic in an area she was familiar enough with to not get lost in. Shortly there after she was hitting the chimes of Dr. Simon Tam, and wondered briefly is he was like the former staff nurse at the precinct. Nice little old Asian lady with a whip of white hair and eyes so keen they could slide onions with a glance.

There is a lot to be said about dealing with worry (or fear, or anxiety, or madness) through work. Certainly, it works for Annie. After she was kicked out of the Careers, her father had her assisting him at his lighthouse - taking measurements, organising records, compiling reports. After she came home after her Games, still trying to claw her way through a mental breakdown, the other victors had her going through the paperwork for the Career Academy, sorting it and restructuring it and calculating payments.

It helped. Both times, it helped.

And, now, being allowed to be one of the volunteers in Sickbay helps. Being allowed to work with the data being generated by everyone's efforts to find a cure, to help organise, to help do an assistant's tedious, important work of going over printouts and double-checking things for those with more expertise lets her fill her mind with other things. Keep how sick with fear (that Finnick can't be cured) and worry (that while he's avoiding her she can't make sure he's okay, that nothing worse has happened) at bay.

Well.

Helps keep it all at bay. Certainly, it's better than doing nothing.

But someone might want to try and tell the woman to either get some sleep or actually eat something.

Boy, is Beverly ever glad things are back to normal — or at least what passes for normal these days. Things got a little strange last month, but so far there haven't been any out-of-the-ordinary incidents. That should probably worry her, huh?

O-kay, so things have been a little ... odd on the ship. Some people have been acting rather out of character, ducking their duties for romantic escapades or complaining that their good friends aren't quite themselves. Romance may be in the air, but the CMO has other ideas. Like maybe an alien pest who likes to play tricks on people. Her sickbay hasn't gone unaffected, but luckily the strange effects are beginning to wear off and people are returning to work. Still, she's prepared to treat anything. Just please assure her you were safe and responsible if you, uh, made a special friend.

Well, it seems that sometimes life aboard this ship can be as exciting, if not more so, than life aboard Serenity.

Simon, as usual, has been spending most of his spare time in the sickbay, working, or in his quarters, reading, for the sake of learning more about the medical technology of this time and place, with all the similarities and differences it bears to his own.

He has to do that. It's the only way to stop himself going mad with the worry that aches at him for River.

He does, however, have to eat, and he doesn't always do that in his room. He'd come into the lounge for dinner and found it ... significantly changed from normal. It's covered in draperies that would be more at home in Inara's shuttle than on any facility on any spaceship Simon's ever seen. There is music, there is a banquet table, and around the edges of the lounge, people playing cards.

Simon eyes it all with curiosity as he eats, recognizing some of the foodstuffs as things from Earth-that-Was history, but it's the card games that draw his attention. After his meal, he can be found standing quietly to one side of a table, unobtrusively watching the players go through the motions of a game that is apparently both like and unlike Tall Card.

He's frowning as he tries to puzzle out the rules.

At the very least, it's an interesting intellectual exercise.

The thing about emergencies -
Well, actually there are a lot of things about emergencies. If they weren't they'd be solved early enough that no one noticed. The thing about emergencies that Marika is working on right now is that you need to know what to do as much as possible before the problem happens.

Which is why she's inside the Jeffries Tubes with a PADD in one hand and a small flashlight stuck in her mouth.

Please don't mention it to Security if you happen to bump into her? It would be awkward.

There has been quite a lot of activity in Sickbay over the last couple of days. In addition to new guests arriving on the Enterprise, all of whom need to be cleared and vaccinated when necessary, there are the wounded who have come back from Alemar III and those looking in on them. Dr. Crusher has never been more glad that she isn't short-staffed.

While Lieutenant Worf and his security detail bring in the new passengers, Beverly ensures those recuperating have enough space and privacy. Beds may be limited, but nobody will be on the floor in her sickbay. For those who haven't been here before, Sickbay is fairly ordinary for a ship's hospital. It has been six days, give or take, since her arrival. Marion feels a stab f guilt every time she thinks about the meeting she should have gone to. Lives are on the line back home and since there are no truly wild places for her to go to for decompressing Marion is trying to find something to do for a distraction.

Someday someone will point her at the holodeck but this is not that day, clearly. For a while she writes a great deal. The pace at which she just plugs away at the large pad of paper she got her hands on would be a bit much for other people but Marion writes professionally and for other reasons so really, this is nothing.

She is lost in what she is doing for a while. Then she finally comes up for air. She blinks blearily and stretches to get the cramp out out of her hands. She blinks a little at the slight ink stain she has left but thinks nothing of it.

She goes to get a drink then and just leans back in her seat propping her feet on the side of the table as she flips back to the first page of the note book. She might as well see what came pouring out of her. She hopes that recent events aren't affecting her writing too much. It would be a shame.

After everything that had happened and Simon staying with her that time until she'd finally fallen into an exhaustive sleep when she couldn't cry any more. Kaylee felt that they should be able to do something a little bit more cheery. Sat in Ten Forward though she felt awkward. Serenity was home, the big table and the chairs were familiar and that was what was wrong then. No matter how nice the folk were that she'd met already it wasn't home.

Kaylee missed being able to go curl up in the hammock in the engine room and let the noise of the engine keep her company as she read until her eyes closed. There was no going back to that. Everything had changed. There were no tatty paperbacks here for her to read. Instead she had a PADD and was going through what she could access from that.

That was how she could be found with the PADD at the table.

TEN FORWARD
(Closed)

He doesn't remember when he got the chance to use his legs again. Frankly, it isn't much of a luxury when McCoy can barely stand on those swollen feet. Each step is numb, like he's been wandering in some godforsaken tundra with snow up to his knees. But it's not. The air is cool, even if his body is boiling from fever. There is no bite or fall of snow, just the feeling.

Five paces in and the doctor crumbles like someone cut his damn strings and let him fall to the floor in pieces. Ah well, it sure's better than walking. The vertigo is less noticeable this low to the ground, that's good. Progress is good. Be nice if he could remember just where in the hell this progress brought him to. His last memories are of a cavernous room, strung up by his hands and bloodied by two sadistic bastards with too much time on their hands--Correction, not enough time. And with that recollection, McCoy finally tries to see the world he's fallen to.

The lights are dim without being an obstacle, but the rest makes no sense. There's people or the sounds of them: Talking, low conversation that's occasionally cut by harsh laughter. His eyes are too swollen to make much sense of anything. But it reminds him of a dining hall, and McCoy has to wonder if this is Heaven. Or Hell. Then again it hurts too much to be anything else but reality. He's not falling into the sweet by and by that easily, that is just not his luck. There's a clatter to his right as if someone jumped from their seat, legs squealing against the ground. Conversation turns quiet, rushed, and somehow closer even as he begins to drool crimson on the clean floors.

SICKBAY
(Open to all)

The readings from his own monitor are what wake him. He can't help but squint in the bright clinical light as his blue eyes adjust. Smells of sterility are familiar, and McCoy doesn't need more than two brain cells to rub together that he's in Sickbay. That certainly puts his mind at ease even if there are a hundred questions whirling around in his brain.

Not to be too cynical, but he hadn't imagined getting out of their time on Minara II alive after the way those Vians worked him over. He doesn't regret his decision--Obviously, since everything seems to have worked out--but it certainly had been a rather character building experience to say the least. And he would do it again for his friends, for Jim and that pointy-eared devil he had the nerve to stuff into that category. Now the question is where are they?

There's no one around him, nurse or otherwise. His private room is, strangely, unfamiliar. Even the biobed is outfitted differently, which puts him back on high alert. Maybe they couldn't make it back to the Enterprise. Maybe his injuries were so grievous he had to be transferred--Though that seemed real unlikely. No, nothing about this makes sense, and he's starting to get frustrated with no answers. He's a doctor for Chrissake! He should be the one holding the cards here.

spideys: (066 ❖ too many lost.)
[personal profile] spideys
It's difficult, painful work getting his shirt over his head without wincing from the bruises that blossom impressive shades of purple and red across his back and his chest. It hurts too much to remove his Spidey suit anyway, so he keeps it on, aware of the burns and tears that will have to be mended later.

Peter Parker had cut it very close in his fight against The Lizard, but he'd done it. The antidote to the Lizard's serum had been administered to the greater area of Manhattan without a second to spare, and Connors as well as half of the NYPD sent out to stop him had soon been shed of scales, tail, teeth and all. But if it weren't for Captain Stacy -

He swallows, squeezing his eyes shut - focus, Parker. You didn't do it. You weren't responsible for what happened to him ...

(And yet, wasn't he?)
- for the briefest of moments, before he focuses on the task at hand: getting home. Aunt May will worry if he's even another minute late.

"Eggs," he says suddenly to himself, the very thought of something so mundane nearly making him laugh aloud, delirious. Aunt May had asked for eggs. Organic ones, for tomorrow's breakfast.

It's late and the sirens are louder than ever, ringing in his ears to the beat of his pounding heart; the police will be here if they haven't arrived already. They'll wonder about Captain Stacy, they'll find his body, they'll (undoubtedly) blame him, and why shouldn't wouldn't they? Spider-Man should have been able to take on the Lizard alone. But he couldn't do it. He wasn't strong enough on his own, and he didn't want to kill Doc Connors, no matter what transpired. There was still a man somewhere underneath all of that reptile. But because of Peter, because it was his formula that did it, another man is dead. A good man, and the only one besides his daughter to know his secret.

So, with a fair amount of reluctance, he pulls his mask back on and leaves Gwen's dad on the top of Oscorp Tower.

He doesn't know how he gets down to street level again, his web cartridges empty, but he does. The mask over his face suddenly feels hot, like he might suffocate if he wears it any longer, so Peter - now dressed like a civilian, save for the mask - pulls it off and stuffs it into his backpack with his empty wristlets and gloves. He finds eggs at the nearest convenience store, hops on the last train home, and keeps to himself. No one so much as blinks an eye at him, even with the cuts on his face and the bruises on his knuckles.

It could be any ordinary night, even if it's really anything but.

And just as he's hobbling up his side-street, watchful for the familiar lights and the shadowy movement of his Aunt behind the curtain in the living room, he feels the subtlest of shifts in the air around him -

- and blinks at the dramatic change in his environment.

His Spidey-sense is tingling like mad, an irritable sensation in the back of his mind that makes him twitch once, twice against his will.

He narrows his eyes and licks his lips. They're cracked and they're bleeding and they hurt, but that's kind of the last of his concerns.

They are entering their third month of this nonsense, and Lieutenant Worf will never admit that the increased activity and responsibility is ... thrilling. He is as stone-faced as always, glaring out over the assembled crowd without a hint of happiness. The medical team have cleared through a new crop of passengers, all needing permanent lodgings. So Ten Forward is where you will find yourselves today, staring down the barrel at an unhappy Klingon.

As chief of security, it is Worf's responsibility to instruct everyone on the correct behavior and protocols needed for life aboard the Enterprise. It is his duty, and the captain's instructions, so he will handle this the honorable way. As he has done this before, he has a speech prepared:

"The computer will instruct you on where all cleared-for-access decks are. You only have to ask where the area you are trying to get to is located, and it will give you clear directions. Do not visit any restricted areas. The bridge, engine rooms, transporter rooms, and all command centers are off-limits.

"With that in mind, there are a few rules you must obey before I give you your new assignments. One, do not discharge any weapon while on the Enterprise. Two, do not assault any other passenger aboard in any way; that includes injury, death, or violating their personal rights. Three, do not tamper with the operational procedures of the ship. Four, do not steal items or technology from the ship. Five, do not interrupt any official areas of the ship without proper authorization, and do not invade the privacy of other guest or crew quarters.

"Copies of the Prime Directive will be made available to all of you, and placed in each room. As you are not Starfleet officers, you are not obligated to abide by this rule; however, it is important you understand why we do.

"Now, the rooms," he rumbles, reading off the list of quarters, their location, and the guests who will be sharing them.

"I will remain here to answer questions," Worf concludes. "And my team will be standing by to escort you where you need to be."

The list is also displayed on a PADD, where people can refer to it if they need to.

[ooc: Open log for building CR with new roommates and meeting neighbors, "party post" style! Everyone should participate if and when they can, so they can get acquainted with who they will be rooming with for at least the next several months. Rooms are aligned the way they would be in a typical hotel: odd numbers on the left, even numbers on the right (so 0711 and 0713 will be next door neighbors, while 0712 is directly across the hall). There is an OOC post in the OOC comm where players can connect with questions, and where we'll post more details about the rooms themselves, so check in over there. If you need to ask security questions, or need them to swing by another thread, just put "Security officer, please!" in the subject line of your tag, and the mods will send someone to you ASAP.]

[During the battle. Trigger warning: violence, character death.]

Trigger warning: violence. After the battle. )

It's eerie, in the quiet after the noise has stopped, and the sound of the lift that brings Mal back is almost too loud. Simon hardly hears what anyone says, the adrenaline doing little to keep the world from fading around him into a murmur of distant sounds.

But he does see River, outlined in light, almost like a guardian angel, and he does hear the order to stand down, and he knows the battle is over.

He barely notices that when the Alliance troops call for medical assistance, instead of him going to an infirmary, the infirmary comes to him.

This post is plot-locked to [[personal profile] meimeimechanic and [personal profile] asklepian]. Everyone else will get a chance to talk to Simon when he's recovered!
