[Sickbay]: Round Four Scans and Vaccines

There has been quite a lot of activity in Sickbay over the last couple of days. In addition to new guests arriving on the Enterprise, all of whom need to be cleared and vaccinated when necessary, there are the wounded who have come back from Alemar III and those looking in on them. Dr. Crusher has never been more glad that she isn't short-staffed.

While Lieutenant Worf and his security detail bring in the new passengers, Beverly ensures those recuperating have enough space and privacy. Beds may be limited, but nobody will be on the floor in her sickbay. For those who haven't been here before, Sickbay is fairly ordinary for a ship's hospital. There are no terrifying devices or humming machines you might see in a sci-fi thriller. The biobeds along the walls are equipped with biofunction monitors, but look fairly standard. Instead of silver trays filled with metal tools and sawblades, there are an array of small devices that look as harmless as cell phones.

As for the staff, they're all well-groomed and friendly. As a matter of fact, all personnel look harmless. Well, perhaps excluding the sun avatar, but Trance Gemini is as skilled as the Starfleet officers.

"All right, come in," one of them calls out as you enter. "Don't be shy. It's just a scan and a hypospray, nothing to worry about."

[ooc: Open log! For new characters (August and September apps), tagging isn't mandatory but ICly going to sickbay is. So if you'd prefer to skip threading with one of our doctors, you can handwave that your character got a clean bill of health and a shot and were sent on their merry way. For those who are tagging, we have Julian Bashir, Trance Gemini, and Simon Tam on deck, with Beverly Crusher by request only. So please specify in the subject line of your tag who you would like. For those returned from the Alemar III plot, if you are not requesting a thread with a doctor but would like your character open for visitors, put "Visiting Post" in your subject line, or specify if it's locked to specific visitors. If you would like more details about sickbay, here's the wiki page. If you haven't made your intro yet, you can assume the doctors will want to see your character shortly after they arrive, and backtagging is love!]

"Honestly, with all the doctors running about, not to mention Doctor Crusher's medical staff, I doubt they'll even notice me missing. Probably appreciate the space."

He does grab a nurse, though, just to let them know that he'll be leaving for a short time. True to his suspicion, she just waves him off.

"Well, there's any number of places we can find a quiet corner. It's privacy that's the trick. You won't have assigned quarters yet--we could go to mine."

He's not meaning it as any sort of come-on, though after the words left his mouth he realized it could certainly be taken as such. Oops.

Seven is resistant to most bacterial and viral infections, radiation, and any number of illness, injury, or other sort of malady. Therefore, she thinks visiting the sickbay is rather pointless. But when she said as much, she was promptly ignored and ushered there anyway.

The security and medical staff are looking at her sidelong, as if evaluating how much of a threat she might be--obviously they're uneasy about her implants. It isn't precisely difficult to deduce that they're Borg in origin.

Instead of telegraphing her own discomfort and unease, Seven stands ramrod straight in a corner, expression utterly neutral and hands clasped behind her back, waiting for the attention of one of the medics.

No doubt it is going to be strange. She's surprised, actually, at how calmly Julian seems to take it. Not that she expects him to throw a tantrum or anything, but he always seemed to drive himself when it comes to his work, although never as much as, say, Kira or Odo.

"If you think it's safe." Her mind doesn't even turn to that alternate suggestion. No, there is that serious air that settles over her. "Then that will work."

It's just standard vaccinations and checkups, if it was some sort of crisis, Julian would be there til the bitter end. But he's not strictly needed right now--this takes precedence, before one of them slips up.

"Despite having a roommate, he's not even from this reality, so even if he's about he'll have no idea what we're discussing. It's more private than Ten Forward, at least."

He leads Jadzia out of Sickbay with a nod to the security staff, then to the turbolift.

[personal profile] asklepian 2014-09-21 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Well, that's certainly convenient. I suppose that means you won't be paying us many visits."

Julian would certainly understand the crisis of self-identity--he went through it himself, years ago. He logs the scan--and it's certainly interesting, he'd like to take a closer look when a moment presents itself--with Peter's permission of course, he intends to be painstaking about the confidentiality.

"I've studied genetics rather extensively, engineering on higher lifeforms isn't legal within Federation space, dire circumstances aside, but we do have the capability--I'm getting the impression it's much more common elsewhere."

Julian studies the readouts for a moment, he doesn't think it'll be any issue giving Peter the standard vaccines. He picks up a hypo and goes to the medical replicator next to the biobed. "Just this left, and you'll be free to go--I'll have to make sure that it's working, but that'll just be a couple extra minutes."

[personal profile] ex_old_man857 2014-09-21 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"A roommate?" And not from this reality? Colour Dax curious. Would that mean she'll be getting one? Not that she would mind, although depending on the personality of who she gets to bunk with... It could lead to some interesting times.

She follows him to the turbolift. "A good thing the Enterprise can handle additional people... Otherwise, who knows where we'd be. Dropped on a planet until the mess was cleaned up- which, with Q..."

Could be quite some time. Although, her mind shifts, starts to work back to the year, trying to think of events that happened. And yes... "Although, depending on the stardate."

But she leaves it at that, zipping her mouth.

"I don't even know that it's common back where I'm from ... it's in the early experimentation stages and -"

Peter shrugs.

Wow, he's never, ever divulged in even this much information before. Never thought he ever would (or could) and it scares him.

He swallows, lips pressed together in a tight line.

"I don't plan on visiting the sickbay much if I can help it, don't worry." He watches with wary eyes as Julian goes for the hypospray.

"What's your name anyway, doc?"

[personal profile] asklepian 2014-09-22 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
"Yes. I suppose they don't know how much space they'll be needing." Julian hasn't shared a room since the Academy, so doing so now has taken...a bit of readjustment. He doesn't mind Jack at all though.

"Deck seven, section four," he says as they step into the turbolift--the doors obligingly swish shut, and then they're in motion.

"Exactly. It's...not exactly an ideal situation he's put us in."

[personal profile] asklepian 2014-09-22 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
"Good, we'd rather you not have to avail yourself of our services, all things told." Julian moves even much more slowly than even his normal relaxed manner, and doesn't go for the standard injection site at the neck, electing to use the upper shoulder instead, straight through the cloth of Peter's shirt. The only thing Peter should feel is the pressure of him holding the hypospray against his arm and activating it.

"Julian Bashir. Pleased to meet you."
spideys: (018 ❖ shyderp.)

[personal profile] spideys 2014-09-22 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Nice to meet you too, Dr Bashir."

It's definitely not an injection method Peter's used to. He's glad he doesn't have to remove his clothes anyway, because beneath his long-sleeved shirt is his Spidey suit, and that's another set of questions he really wants to avoid.

"What's the vaccination for, exactly? And how does it work?"

[personal profile] ex_old_man857 2014-09-22 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
"I take it Q hasn't slowed down then- although, does he return people?" And how, could be the question. No doubt asking would be off the table, although perhaps enough grovelling... Which might not even work either.

"Ah." Amazing how much could be conveyed with one noise. Leaning back against the wall, she decides it was like that. "All we're missing is Benjamin."

Musing to the last time the three of them got put in to the past. That hadn't gone at all as planned. But she gives him a dry smile. "We'll jump those hurdles when they come then."

"Some of the more common extraterrestrial--used in the literal sense, as in not of Terra--bacterial and viral infectious agents that humans haven't been exposed to. It's an unfortunate side-effect of being in an enclosed environment with a crew spanning dozens of species. The benefits are far more numerous, but I could do without the Andorian shingles."

Julian tends to talk rather a lot, if Peter hasn't noticed that by now.

"It works like any other vaccination--using inert or harmless strains of the microorganisms to cause your immune system to build up antibodies for the specific agents. We've just streamlined the process considerably over the last century or so."

Julian is scanning the whole time he's talking, making sure that everything is going as intended.

"And there's also the fact that we've eliminated quite a number of diseases since the 21st century, and reintroducing them could cause...well, significant upset would be putting it mildly. That's what necessitates the antibiotics. You might be a carrier for something that's causing absolutely no harm to you, but should it be transmitted to me, for example, could kill me because I would have no immunity to it."

"Well, there are well over 90 individuals accounted for that have been brought here from...any number of times and places, really. The majority have no knowledge of Starfleet whatsoever, and are even from the 21st century or earlier."

It's...well, the Prime Directive doesn't really have an established precedence for this, he thinks.

"This is infinitely preferable to that time," Julian says--because is it ever. The past had been uncomfortable for any number of reasons, and it had only gotten worse when Gabriel Bell had been killed trying to defend them.

"I'm honestly glad you're here, Jadzia." There's familiar faces, but it's a massive relief to have one that he can actually talk to.

"Yup. It was 2014 for me," Marion supplies. That means she is fro a time period very different from Dylan or anyone from the Enterprise. She doesn't really seem intimidated by anything here.

Marion wouldn't let it show even if she was. She seems to be holding it together pretty well on the surface. The truth of the matter is that she is angry as hell but can't let herself express that. Letting herself give into anger is just dangerous.

"Uh...." She trails off blinking like a small owl. "It makes sense, sure. I mean my immune system is fantastic but I'd probably be laid flat by whatever equivalent they have for the flu here."

For like a day. Her immune system would chew it up and spit it out,

Finally, someone with some sense.

"It's a medical device akin to a syringe. We stopped using needles quite some time ago--a hypospray instead delivers medication via pressurized air."

The question is answered as Julian approaches, it hasn't been quite so busy this time around as last, but still there are enough people requiring attention that he's been on his toes all morning.

"I'm Doctor Julian Bashir," he introduces with a smile.

His smile is a little rueful.

"Then you definitely wouldn't have heard of where I'm from. But there are still some Earth classics around in my time."

He's not sure why it is that so many of the people here are from so far from his own time and place. It's isolating, an isolation too familiar to be anything more than just another, deeper layer on top of the isolation he's felt from everyone in his own universe since Hephaistos. Everyone except Rommie, who's still back there.

Nobody he's met here except his crew is from any closer than thousands of years to his time. None of them has heard of the Commonwealth or the High Guard. His whole life up until this point means nothing to them.

"Mine's fantastic too." His also has the added bonus of being boosted by nanobots. He lifts his hands, palm-up, in a gesture at the futility of arguing that particular point when he's the one stuck in bed until Trance lets him out. Because there are things other than his immune system that they recorded in his scans.

Like his metabolism. Which is the whole reason he's in sickbay right now. "Didn't stop me winding up in here."

"But sadly not one of my favorites," Marion teases him with a crooked grin. She has a healthy smile. She also expresses her amusement better than she does the anger boiling deep down inside of her.

Q will get a punch to the face should they ever meet. Or at least she will try.

She won't ask exactly what landed him here. She knows a thing or two about privacy given how much she values her own.

"I've had that happen before." Usually injuries that laid her up. "It just happens sometimes."

She takes a long look around the room. "Do they do private exams by request? Got.... a couple questions I need cleared up."

[personal profile] dreams_dont_die 2014-09-22 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Clearly the future has no taste," he teases back. He's used to conversations like this; Dylan's lack of knowledge of things from Earth is a fairly common source of exasperation from Harper, and he's more inclined to accept gentle teasing from Marion than the looks of disgust from Harper.

Marion's amusement's much nicer to look at, for one.

"But you know, there's some pretty good stuff that's not from Earth out there, too. At least, in my world," he adds, aware that much of the literature he likes probably doesn't exist in this world or this time.

If this world will never know Vedran poetry, it's missing out.

He considers her question, head tilting to one side.

"Go talk to Trance," he says. "She's my ship's medic, back in our universe. She can handle just about anything."

Admittedly, she had dragged Julian over in the middle of his exam, but ... that had been exactly what had been needed, at that moment, though he hadn't known it at the time.

He's pretty sure she did, though.

"You can't miss her. She's the one with the gold skin and horns."

Simon may not be the best at reading people, but he does know enough to work out when someone is nervous about seeing a doctor. It's pretty clear in the man's body language; Simon's seen it countless times before, even from people who needed a doctor so badly they'd shown up in the ER on Osiris.

Of course, he also regularly treats Captain Reynolds and Jayne, neither of whom is ever fond of seeking medical attention.

So he does his best to smile at the man.

"There's, ah, nothing to be concerned about. This is just a routine scan and vaccination. I'm Doctor Tam."

"All right, cool," Peter says, listening and comprehending everything the good doctor says. Which is good to know - good in that at least the science is more or less the same.

He waits, watching with the type of interest only a fellow science-nerd could have.

"Guess I didn't consider that the stuff I'm used to might actually kill someone in the future. Huh."

There's a man sat on one of the beds in Sickbay, eyes closed, head nodding along to a tune... that's playing through a set of headphones. The cable trails down his body, to an object half-concealed by his red jacket. It's an old Sony Walkman, in working condition.

As you get closer, you can probably hear the man singing under his breath.

He hasn't actually spoken to Harper face to face in days. Not since he found out what Harper and Trance had been up to before he arrived on the Enterprise. They've spoken over the comms, the night when he'd told Harper exactly what he thought of that, and again, after the earthquake, when he'd just been so glad to hear Harper's voice and know he was alive that everything else had been pushed aside for the moment.

Right now?

It's just good to see his engineer again, looking very little the worse for the three days they'd all spent stuck on Alemar III.

"Harper," he says, in greeting, setting down the PADD. "I wouldn't be here otherwise."

To someone who knows him as well as Harper does, the fact that he actually needs to be in sickbay would be apparent. The injuries he'd picked up in the rockfall and fighting are healing, leaving just the remnants of a gash on his temple, but his face is thinner, more hollowed, than his crew are used to seeing it.

"You got off the planet okay, then."

That's more of a relief than he's about to admit out loud.

He'd been worried those three days, as much as he'd tried not to be.

Trance walked up to him. He'd probably notice the force lance strapped to her hip and the two knives in her boots. And then there was the horns. Trance wasn't hard to spot, with her golden orange and yellow skin that literally glittered in the light and the skin tight leather.

"Hi, I'm Trance Gemini. Could I ask you to come with me?"

Trance goes right up to her, having finished with another crew member. Unlike the other starfleet personal around her, Seven's implants don't seem to bother the young avatar at all. In the Bad Future, where Trance had come from, she had to put Beka back together numerous times, once she even had to reattach her head. Little by little parts of Beka that used to be human had been replaced by Trance, by machinery, technology. She understood it's value, and having treated Harper, implant and all, it wasn't a foreign concept.

"I'm Trance Gemini. I'd like to give you a scan and make sure you are up to date on vaccinations." She didn't ask if it was okay. The woman in front of her did not seem like she needed the same coddling as some of her more human patients.

"I'll be sure and put in the request for you. If you need to move furniture around, let me know. I'll be happy to help. You have full access to the replicator, but I'll create a menu for you so you know what might be best. I imagine you're not used to many of the foods they have available here. "

Trance motioned for her to lie down on the biobed. "Do you mind if I get a scan of you? That way if I'm not available someone else can help you. I'll put a note in your record if you wish that you'd prefer to be seen by me."
