[Sickbay]: Round Four Scans and Vaccines

There has been quite a lot of activity in Sickbay over the last couple of days. In addition to new guests arriving on the Enterprise, all of whom need to be cleared and vaccinated when necessary, there are the wounded who have come back from Alemar III and those looking in on them. Dr. Crusher has never been more glad that she isn't short-staffed.

While Lieutenant Worf and his security detail bring in the new passengers, Beverly ensures those recuperating have enough space and privacy. Beds may be limited, but nobody will be on the floor in her sickbay. For those who haven't been here before, Sickbay is fairly ordinary for a ship's hospital. There are no terrifying devices or humming machines you might see in a sci-fi thriller. The biobeds along the walls are equipped with biofunction monitors, but look fairly standard. Instead of silver trays filled with metal tools and sawblades, there are an array of small devices that look as harmless as cell phones.

As for the staff, they're all well-groomed and friendly. As a matter of fact, all personnel look harmless. Well, perhaps excluding the sun avatar, but Trance Gemini is as skilled as the Starfleet officers.

"All right, come in," one of them calls out as you enter. "Don't be shy. It's just a scan and a hypospray, nothing to worry about."

[ooc: Open log! For new characters (August and September apps), tagging isn't mandatory but ICly going to sickbay is. So if you'd prefer to skip threading with one of our doctors, you can handwave that your character got a clean bill of health and a shot and were sent on their merry way. For those who are tagging, we have Julian Bashir, Trance Gemini, and Simon Tam on deck, with Beverly Crusher by request only. So please specify in the subject line of your tag who you would like. For those returned from the Alemar III plot, if you are not requesting a thread with a doctor but would like your character open for visitors, put "Visiting Post" in your subject line, or specify if it's locked to specific visitors. If you would like more details about sickbay, here's the wiki page. If you haven't made your intro yet, you can assume the doctors will want to see your character shortly after they arrive, and backtagging is love!]

Simon had been warned that they could expect some patients who were ... well, rather less human than his usual patients back in his own world. That would certainly appear to be the case with this particular patient.

Well. He's been told what to do, and that is to proceed as normal unless there is a reason to suspect that would be a bad idea. After all, the medical crew on this ship have far more experience in treating different species than Simon does, since alien races are apparently a part of their world in a way they never have been of his.

"In your own place and time, perhaps," Simon points out. "But there may be illnesses in this one that your immune system has never encountered before."

"If dermafollica didn't kill me, I doubt anything here will," Rygel says.

His earbrows twitch, then shrug with the rest of him.

"But since I don't have any other choice, let's get this over with."

"It's for everyone's benefit. There's also an antibiotic as a preventative against any infections from your time being spread here."

But it seems that this particular patient is not going to offer any strenuous resistance -- or at least nothing worse than the minor grousing Simon faces most days aboard Serenity.

He smiles.

"It won't take long. Now, before we begin, are there any medical conditions I should know about? I'll also need to take a scan so we have a record in case you do become unwell".

"If you say so. I'm not Dominar of this ship."

Rygel hovers over the biobed.

"Many cycles ago I had a case of Hynerian dermafollica. It's one of the deadliest diseases in the known universe. I survived and now it lies dormant. But it won't spread to anyone else barring some catastrophic failure of my immune system."

Dominar is not a title with which Simon is familiar, but he understands the intention of the words, at least. It's acquiescence, which is probably the best they can expect from most of their visitors here, given the circumstance that none of them have a choice about being on the ship or being in the sickbay.

There's a pause for a moment before Simon responds to the information about the illness.

"I'll make a note of that. It will likely show up on the scans. Is there any treatment for it?" he asks, for the sake of completeness in the files.

The possibility of facing diseases from other realities is not a pleasant one; though he does trust Rygel about the disease's behavior, it's still a sobering reminder of what could happen.

Rygel shrugs.

"If you're rich enough, there's a cure for almost anything," he says. "But if you'd like to know what it is, you'll have to ask someone else. Even if I had been in a condition to discuss my illness, the only thing I would have said to the Diagnosan would have been 'Cut this plague the frell out of me.'"

Well. That sounds familiar.

Another world where the rich can buy almost whatever they want while the poor have to get by. That sounds like the world Simon came here from, where the Alliance and the Core take the best and leave the Outer Rim to struggle on in poverty with their most basic needs at risk.

Not that he'd have thought that way once. He'd supported Unification during the war, following his father's beliefs and those of the people all around him. The life he's led on Serenity taught him to think differently about the Rim, and what had happened to River ... well. That taught him more about the Alliance than anyone could ever forgive.

"It's a good thing it's dormant," he comments, though there's really no need for it. "But I'll know what it is when it comes up on the scan."

He looks up. "All right. If you sit still, the biobed and tricorder will take some readings and log them into the system in case we do need to treat you for anything."

"Good. Then it will be over quickly."

Rygel shuffles off his thronesled onto the biobed, getting in one last grumble and huff before the scan begins.

"And thank the yotz for that."
