[Ten Forward] Release from Quarantine and Rooming Assignments

Lieutenant Worf has gathered all of the new "guests" together in Ten Forward to instruct them on correct behavior and protocols now that they have been released from quarantine. He looks as happy and approachable as you might expect, which is to say he doesn't. It is his duty, and the captain's instructions, and so he will handle this riffraff the honorable way.

"The computer will instruct you on where all cleared-for-access decks are. You only have to ask where the area you are trying to get to is located, and it will give you clear directions. Do not visit any restricted areas. The bridge, engine rooms, transporter rooms, and all command centers are off-limits."

This is chased by a stern look to all the gathered guests.

"With that in mind, there are a few rules you must obey before I give you your new assignments. One, do not discharge any weapon while on the Enterprise. Two, do not assault any other passenger aboard in any way; that includes injury, death, or violating their personal rights. Three, do not tamper with the operational procedures of the ship. Four, do not steal items or technology from the ship. Five, do not interrupt any official areas of the ship without proper authorization, and do not invade the privacy of other guest or crew quarters.

"Copies of the Prime Directive will be made available to all of you, and placed in each room. As you are not Starfleet officers, you are not obligated to abide by this rule; however, it is important you understand why we do."

He takes a deep breath. Unless they show themselves to be undisciplined or unruly, it is the most he can do.

"Now, the rooms," he rumbles, reading aloud the list of quarters, their location, and the guests who will be sharing them.

"I will remain here to answer questions," Worf concludes. "And my team will be standing by to escort you where you need to be."

The list is also displayed on a PADD, where people can refer to it if they need to.

Everyone should participate if and when they can, so they can get acquainted with who they will be rooming with for at least the next several months. Rooms are aligned the way they would be in a typical hotel: odd numbers on the left, even numbers on the right (so 0711 and 0713 will be next door neighbors, while 0712 is directly across the hall). Room 722 - Ian and Billy + any neighbours or anyone else wandering by

Ian was glad to be out of quarantine. Guessing that the room would be more plush than quarantine had been, going by Ten Forward's plushness, he was excited to see what it looked like. However, when he got there, he slumped, the excitedness going out of him.

"It doesn't have any windows." He went over to the outside wall and put a hand against it, but it was definitely a wall and not just a very well concealed blind. He'd been hoping for a good view, but not expecting no view at all.

Billy was rather anxious as he studied the list. Andros lived next door---that was good, right? He was with that guy Adam mentioned. And Adam was further down, with Dr. McCoy. They'd really have to be careful with that particular situation.

As for himself, Billy didn't recognize the name next to his, but that only meant he needed to find out. So he stood outside the door and announced his presence.

"Mr. Chesterson, are you here?"

"Yes." Ian turned round to face the door and see who had asked for him. It was a teenager he thought he might have seen around, but hadn't spoken to.

"Are you Billy?" he guessed, since the other occupant of this room was the most likely person to be standing at the door, asking for him.

"Yes sir," Billy answered, cautiously taking a step inside. He really didn't have much to put down: just a small bundle of replicated clothing, which was easy enough to roll away into a drawer.

"I won't be long. Honestly, I probably won't be here much at all. But we should probably touch base on sleeping habits so I don't inadvertently disturb you."

"All right." Ian leaned against a wall. He wasn't planning on spending much time here either, apart from sleeping. "But you don't need to call me sir. If we're going to be sharing a room then you may as well call me Ian."

"Of course," Billy agreed, moving to curiously touch the armrests of one of the sofas. He then slipped around it to offer his hand in greeting. "Pleased to meet you, Ian...though this situation still isn't quite the pleasure it should be," he laughed.

"Trip out into the cosmos and this is what happens."

Ian laughed himself, as he shook Billy's hand. "It would have been nice to have been asked about coming here, but it's an interesting place."

He would have said more, but they had been going to talk about sleeping arrangements. "I can sleep through anything, so you don't need to worry about waking me up if you're coming or going late at night or early in the morning."

"My problem is more that I tend to stay up and work on blueprints for most of the night," Billy admitted with a sheepish grin. "I really need to ask if I might be allowed to work on simple projects---if I could build some of the building blocks of the basic technology of this era, I could start to understand it."

The prospect excited him more than anything, which led him to pace on over to the replicator. "This replicator, for example. I can only imagine the work that went into creating the code to instantaneously twist matter into the shape of an object."

He looked at it like it was the greatest thing he'd ever seen.

Ian smiled, excited about coming across a teenager excited about that sort of thing. Being a teacher, he was all for encouraging him. It also stopped him pointing out that staying up all night working didn't do you any good. At least for now.

"It is impressive and I would love to know how it works. There must be so many new discoveries and inventions we can learn about," he said excitedly. If only the people here would let them.

"You'll probably find me in the library most of the time," Billy says, still delighted at the idea of it. He's always happy to meet someone ready to learn all about new things. Which makes him wonder about where Ian might have come from.

"So where and when did you come from?" he asks. That question always has an interesting answer here.

"I will definitely be spending some time in there." He wondered what sort of library a spaceship would have and whether they'd be allowed access to all the books.

"I'm from Earth, 1963." It wasn't precisely where he'd come from before he'd found himself here, but that was more complicated to explain. "What about you?"

"I'm from Earth of 1994," Billy says, immediately interested. "So we've both missed centuries of developments---so I should really plan out where I need to target my research first."

He replicates a paper pad and a pencil and starts scribbling. "I guess I'll start with the leadup to space travel on a grand scale like this? That has to be an interesting story. But then there are so many planets to chart and civilizations to learn about..."

He rubs at his temple. "Where would you want to start reading?"

"I almost don't know where to start." He looked a little lost, but he did have four centuries of history to catch up on.

"Maybe I'll find out what the most influential inventions have been. That will at least tell me how to use everything." He picked up the PADD. He could read what it said on it, but didn't really know what to do with it. "This must be more than just an expensive piece of paper."

"Yes, of course," Billy agrees readily, taking another note. "Would you be interested in collaborating, though? I think I've been a little presumptuous."

"Yes, I wouldn't mind." He sat on one of the chairs, which turned out to be quite comfortable. He had to keep reminding himself that he was on a spaceship. "You have thirty years more knowledge than I do."

"From one point of view. From another, I'd say you have more experience with life," Billy countered, also settling down. How neaat!

"And speaking of that---what did you do for a living? If it's okay to ask, that is."

Ian would usually be hesitant to tell a teenager what he did, but he thought Billy probably got on well with his teachers, with his attitude. So he said, "I was a science teacher. "I'm not sure what I'm going to do here." Even if spaceships needed science teachers, his knowledge would be far too out-of-date to teach anyone anything.

That somehow doesn't surprise Billy, and it pleases him. "And I'm a high school science student. We can start by learning about our surroundings? With your extensive understanding from your era, you might have an easier time relearning than most of us.

And if the new arrivals continue, maybe you can eventually teach them."

"I'd like that," Ian said smiling. "It would be good to be a teach again." He'd missed it - what with everything it had been a while he last did any.

"The library might have some books." And just generally having a book to read would be nice. "I think I'll try talking to people. There's bound to be someone who know something and is dying to talk someone's ear off about it. Especially if I buy them a drink." Not that he could literally buy any drinks, but it was the thought that counted.

For Ian or Billy or both!

Let's be real, Darcy didn't really pay attention to the names on the list that weren't hers or her roommate. (Or the number of security personnel upsettingly close to her room.)

But it always pays to be a good neighbor! And this little stretch between security stations, that counts as a "neighborhood," right.

She knocks on the door of Room 722.

Ian opened the door and smiled at the person on the other side. They weren't security, so there was no reason not to. "Hello," he said. "Can I help you?"

"Yes, do you need anything miss?" Billy chimes in from his seat, tearing his eyes away from the table for the first time in a little while. He's written up his best five guesses so far about how the replicator works, and they're all scattered in front of him.

"Hi," Darcy says, extending the 'i' quite a bit further than normal. She's totally not peering into their room.

(She totally is.)

It looks like most people've got the same gig.

"I'm your neighbor! Darcy Lewis, Room 721. Figured I should say hi." She extends her hand to the guy actually at the door, and waves to the other one with her free (left) hand.

"Ian Chesterton. Lovely to meet you." He smiled as he shook her hand. He didn't mind her being nosy and looking in at the room. The only possessions he had that he didn't particularly want other people seeing were safely in a drawer. "Are you also from Earth?" She looked human, but he knew enough to know that didn't necessarily mean anything.

"Billy Cranston, likewise," the boy says, his voice sounding a little closer now. He waves shyly from where he stands a few steps behind, interested in her answer.
