[Ten Forward] Rooming Assignments | Round #3

They are entering their third month of this nonsense, and Lieutenant Worf will never admit that the increased activity and responsibility is ... thrilling. He is as stone-faced as always, glaring out over the assembled crowd without a hint of happiness. The medical team have cleared through a new crop of passengers, all needing permanent lodgings. So Ten Forward is where you will find yourselves today, staring down the barrel at an unhappy Klingon.

As chief of security, it is Worf's responsibility to instruct everyone on the correct behavior and protocols needed for life aboard the Enterprise. It is his duty, and the captain's instructions, so he will handle this the honorable way. As he has done this before, he has a speech prepared:

"The computer will instruct you on where all cleared-for-access decks are. You only have to ask where the area you are trying to get to is located, and it will give you clear directions. Do not visit any restricted areas. The bridge, engine rooms, transporter rooms, and all command centers are off-limits.

"With that in mind, there are a few rules you must obey before I give you your new assignments. One, do not discharge any weapon while on the Enterprise. Two, do not assault any other passenger aboard in any way; that includes injury, death, or violating their personal rights. Three, do not tamper with the operational procedures of the ship. Four, do not steal items or technology from the ship. Five, do not interrupt any official areas of the ship without proper authorization, and do not invade the privacy of other guest or crew quarters.

"Copies of the Prime Directive will be made available to all of you, and placed in each room. As you are not Starfleet officers, you are not obligated to abide by this rule; however, it is important you understand why we do.

"Now, the rooms," he rumbles, reading off the list of quarters, their location, and the guests who will be sharing them.

Room # 0741 - Seamus Harper and Clayton Danvers
Room # 0742 - KITT's hologram and Andrew McKee
Room # 0743 - Ginny Weasley and Topher Brink
Room # 0744 - Irian t'Aumne and Henry Gold
Room # 0745 - TWO SECURITY PERSONNEL
Room # 0746 - Tyr Anasazi and Telemachus Rhade
Room # 0747 - Chase Collins and Angeal Hewley
Room # 0748 - Dylan Hunt and Lucie Miller
Room # 0749 - Simon Tam and The Doctor (Eight)
Room # 0750 - TWO SECURITY PERSONNEL
Room # 0751 - Kaylee Frye and Laura Kinney

Deck 08, VIP Quarters
Room #0142 - Kathryn Janeway and Jonathan Archer
Room #0143 - Gul Dukat and Tora Ziyal
Room #0144 - James T. Kirk and John Sheppard

"I will remain here to answer questions," Worf concludes. "And my team will be standing by to escort you where you need to be."

The list is also displayed on a PADD, where people can refer to it if they need to.

[ooc: Open log for building CR with new roommates and meeting neighbors, "party post" style! Everyone should participate if and when they can, so they can get acquainted with who they will be rooming with for at least the next several months. Rooms are aligned the way they would be in a typical hotel: odd numbers on the left, even numbers on the right (so 0711 and 0713 will be next door neighbors, while 0712 is directly across the hall). There is an OOC post in the OOC comm where players can connect with questions, and where we'll post more details about the rooms themselves, so check in over there. If you need to ask security questions, or need them to swing by another thread, just put "Security officer, please!" in the subject line of your tag, and the mods will send someone to you ASAP.]

Angeal seems to be a thoughtful sort of guy, and that's something Dylan can respect. Thought. Care. Planning. They're all aspects of a successful warrior and strategist. There's depth in Angeal, if the quiet distance in his gaze is anything to judge by, but Dylan's content to leave that to him.

Everyone has their own thoughts and motivations, and knowing when to draw them out and when to let them sit is part of being a good leader.

So he waits until Angeal's smile consolidates again, and returns it with one of his own as he steps forward to shake his hand.

"Gladly."

It's what Trance told him he needed to do here, and he wants to trust her on that. When she offers advice, it's usually worth listening to.

Rare an occasion as that is.

"It's been good to meet you, neighbor."

It seems entirely natural, seamless, when Kaylee leans further into him, and for once, he finds that he knows what to do. It's not hard, but it's hesitant, because he's never been good at this. At dealing with people. At trying to be the person there for them to lean on. Except River. It's always come naturally with River.

Kaylee, though ... with Kaylee, it's like he never knows where to tread or what to do. What will get twisted in his mouth before it comes out. Now, though, it's just instinct. It's holding her, it's making the same sort of gentle, reassuring hushing he would if it were River. It's letting her tears soak into his shirt and holding her tighter, tilting his head so it rests against hers, trying to keep tears out of his own eyes. Not always succeeding.

Everything's changed. Everything. They've lost so much, because he was trying to help River. And that killed their friends. Killed so many people.

Eventually, her sobs subside and the tears turn to hiccups, but he doesn't stop holding her. He doesn't want to. Never wants to when he's got his arms around her, now less than ever.

Not when she's all he has here.

"Of course," he says, softly.

It's not much. But maybe it's all he can do, and maybe it's enough.

Angeal's nod was a friendly one and it helped to know that he had a friend in someone that had experience with space. It was a comfort to know that something was forging which was a considerable weight lifted off of his shoulders.

He broke the contact with a turn toward the quarters. He was glad for once that he didn't hold back his personable nature. It worked in forming a friendship with a like mind that was just as attentive as he was. It was good to know that he wasn't alone in this.

"Likewise. I need to get to my room and settle things but I will be at Ten Forward later this evening. I...need a shower." Angeal half laughed.

He waves a hand in invitation towards the sofa and chairs in the living area, once again regretting not being in the spacious, welcoming quarters he has on board the Andromeda.

"Yeah," he says, and he can't keep fondness out of his smile, because his crew, as ragtag and unorthodox a group as they may be, are his friends, and as close to a family as he has after the loss of his parents and homeworld to the black hole. "Of the six of us, four of us are here now."

He waits for her to choose where to sit before making any move himself.

The breath he lets out is a little resigned, but his expression has an unspoken question in it. They'd talked about dimensions and space and travel and tesseracting when they'd first met, and he'd gotten the very definite impression that she knew more than she seemed to.

That's not a question that most people would think to ask.

"Not ... entirely. We seem to be here from a period of months apart. And at least one of them's from my future."

Kaylee may tell him off if she hears him talking about someone else's ship like that, doesn't matter if it's true or not it just wasn't polite to do that. "Bet you gotta take good care of her then. If she's the last one an' all." Kaylee can just tell he's a captain like her own.

"So what's she like then? I mean just the three of you on board? 'Cause warship sounds kinda big an' three of you on board must be kinda troublesome. I mean we got a smaller ship an' there's... six of us now."

"Never let it be said I came between a man and his need for basic comforts."

It will be good, insofar as anything much is about being stranded on an unsettlingly different ship in an unsettlingly different world and an unsettlingly different time (again), to have a more permanent room than the temporary guest quarters they've been given. Even if it's one he has to share; it's been a long time since he shared quarters, but he came up through the ranks in the Argosy like anyone else, including time in shared quarters.

"I'll see you around."

And with that, he starts off again towards what he's been told is the way to his new quarters.

"Yeah," he says, a soft smile on his face. "I do. And even if she weren't the last of her class still out there, she's still special, because she's my ship."

Before Hephaistos, he hadn't thought that way, not really. Andromeda had been his ship, and he'd cared for and about her like any captain would. Like any captain was trained to, would anyway because of the bond between the captain and his ship. But she's more than that, now. She's his home and his hope and the last thing he has from the world that's gone. More than that, she's one of the closest friends and confidants he has.

The long breath he lets out is almost a sigh and almost a laugh, caught somewhere between the two, his rueful smile making it more like a suggestion of a chuckle.

"It's not ideal. 'Skeleton crew' would be the way to describe it. We've got a crew of five plus the ship's avatar and a hell of a lot of androids to do the work of a crew of thousands. We couldn't do it if it weren't for Andromeda herself. She can handle a lot of her functions to at least some extent."

Kaylee was going to say something but stopped.

"Wait, I mean I talk to my girl, but you... way you go talkin' like that you mean you're actually talkin' to her? She's walkin' round with you?" Kaylee can't believe that if it's true. It's not a far leap for her to go to but it isn't real. Not happening. Can't be true. Well, now she's running with the idea of a ship walking around with them.

What would Mal think of that. Course Serenity'd be a girl, he'd be complaining about being outnumbered. Jayne would be getting in trouble. River, well River would have someone that she'd get along with.

"We jus' lost some of ours." There was a sad smile. "Serenity's only a small ship."

"Hey!" Kaylee grinned. "I'm Kaylee. So guess we're gonna be sharin'. You ever been on a ship before?" She didn't mean to be nosy but it seemed like there were quite a few folk about that hadn't been on board a spaceship before or been in space. If Kaylee could be helpful then she would try to be.

"I am." He shrugs, and one hand slides down his side to rest at his hip. "The Andromeda has an Artificial Intelligence. She's alive. I can talk to her on viewscreens or holograms, or through her avatar."

If his voice is fond, it's only because he can't really help it. Because Andromeda's been with him for years, because she's been there with him, caught in the black hole, and by his side ever since he'd come out of it.

"She's as much part of my crew as anyone."

And he's closer to her than to anyone else on the ship.

The smile he hadn't noticed was on his face fades at her next words, at the smile that catches only sadness in her eyes.

"I'm sorry. Losing crew is hard."

He's never really recovered from losing his entire crew at Hephaistos, even if most of them made it out of the system to safety, in part because of what he'd done in drawing fire from the escape pods to the Andromeda.

Her corridors still seem too empty.

Rose takes the biggest seat she can find, one that shares space with other guests so that she can settle on the same couch as Dylan.

It's the friendly thing to do. And also, it's a little less formal. Rose isn't much for formalities when she can help it - especially not amongst friends.

"That's a bit complicated, isn't it? It happens," she allows, "but then everything gets all -" there's a shrug, "- barmy."

She didn't move to shake his hand; while she was familiar with the human gesture and recognized it as their version of a polite gesture of greeting, it had always struck her as slightly awkward. Rihannsu attached a little more importance to touching hands.

There was a moment's pause at the question, and then her brows went up. Had no one taught him any more tact than to simply come right out and ask someone what are you?

... Perhaps not. Or perhaps he was just curious. But a Rihannsu child, she thought, would have known better.

"You may call me Irian," she said finally, after another hesitation. Foolish, perhaps, offering her given name so quickly, but he had given her his, and despite the expected human carelessness with names, her own honor required her to return like for like.

"And my people are named Rihannsu, although the Federation still seems to prefer 'Romulan' instead." She'd moved further into the room as she spoke, glancing around. Federation starships had always seemed almost palatial in comparison to all of the ships she herself had served on; even the guest quarters here were larger than she was used to. But then, this was the Federation's flagship; how could they not be?

She turned to glance back at him, thinking of how young he seemed, and how was she to deal with a child, anyhow?

"Do you always ask personal questions of strangers?" It wasn't chiding, not really, but she was out of her depth and it may have been showing a bit.

"I'm Laura." She did not mind questions, it made conversations easier. She had been told by others her age that two words did not make a conversation. "No, I haven't been, but I have been to hell." Literally. This ship did not contain so many demons.

"Have you shared with someone before?"

Henry stored the name in his memory as he would be needing it a lot, it seemed. He'd never lived with anyone but his father so how was he to deal with a woman? And an alien woman at that.

But he continued to smile and nod at the information, noting to looking about Rihannsu and Romulans later on. Then came her question and he looked a little sheepish.

"Sorry. I'm just curious and I've always just asked if I didn't know something that I wanted to know. And besides, we're going to be living together so we're not really strangers." He paused, wondering if he should continue but he did anyway. "I'm a little out of time as well. So I don't know the differences between all the new species yet. Hope I didn't offend you."

"I'm used to complicated."

Rose chooses a spot on the couch, so he sits beside her, one arm resting on its back so he can turn to face her, because giving her as much of his attention as he can is, at this point, simple good manners, and good manners are one of those things so unpleasantly gone from the world after the Fall that he wants to try to reclaim.

Just being in another time and universe is no reason to compromise on that.

"Trying to work out what things that have happened here will do to my present back in my world, I'm not so sure about." He smiles, though the humor in it is a little dry.

"They didn't exactly teach that in the Academy."

[personal profile] aehallh 2014-08-25 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
When it came down to it, men and women were truly not that different. But between children and adults — and Rihannsu and humans, for that matter — the differences were rather more apparent.

And Henry was certainly no Rihannsu child, but he was... rather precocious, she thought, and more straightforward than she had expected. She didn't quite know what to make of it — and despite his insistence that they wouldn't be strangers, it was hardly as if she was ready to let her guard down.

"You have not," she said, when he was finished. At first she had been slightly put off, but she understood he hadn't intended to give offense. At least he knew enough to apologize; she revised her estimate of his manners slightly upward. "But others might be. I'd be cautious what I said here."

Slowly, she sat down on the edge of one of the couches, refusing to settle back on it just yet, not entirely comfortable with being there in that room that seemed so much larger than even her own quarters on Bloodwing.

"I fear," she admitted at last, "that I have little experience with human children, either." Or children at all, if she were to be fully honest. "You may have to forgive me if I misstep."

She didn't quite smile, but there was a slight rueful note in her voice. Irian had an instinctive dislike of admitting to weakness, but trying to pretend as if she knew what to do here would serve her even more poorly.

Yeah, Dylan's definitely polite - and Rose likes that. Not enough polite people around where she's been, but it does make her feel a little more self conscious of her own mannerisms. She's not exactly from the upper crust of society; she's no graduate of any Manner School.

"Yeah. Time and space isn't linear; it's all wobbly and sometimes goes in circles. I learned that, soon as I started travelin' with the Doctor."
dreams_dont_die: (Huh. Well that's revealing.)

His manners were partly imparted to him by his parents and partly by his years of training as an Argosy officer. He was just a human kid from Vishana-Tarn, son of a shuttle pilot and a gardener. But Tarn-Vedra was special; just living there in the soul of the Commonwealth made him want to strive to be the best he could. Rose's manners, though, have their own very definite charm; there's something genuine and warm about her that he appreciates.

It reminds him of friendlier times.

He shakes his head, with a smile that's uneasy not entirely convinced whether it should be twitching with laughter or edged with uncertainty. The way she talks. There it is again. This unassuming woman talking about temporal mechanics not like a physics textbook, but like she really gets it, just in her own colloquial way.

(It makes him miss Sara, or miss her more, because he always misses her.)

"You talk about this stuff like it's everyday for you," he says, with a half-laugh and a shake of his head, but it's good-natured, even admiring. "Time travel's torn apart my life and you just take it in stride."
goldencobra: (S1 - Book tiems)

"I'm sure you'll be fine." Henry shrugged. He didn't want to lay down a rule of leaving him alone but at the same time, as long as she gave him space and didn't treat him like a kid or mother him, then they would be just fine.

He's not sure what else to say to that. He's immensely interested in her species but he doesn't want to ask too many questions. Perhaps in time they'd get to know each other better. But for now, he starts broad.

"Would you mind if I asked you questions about you or your species? I can ask the computer if you'd rather but the information would be more reliable from you." He hopes that's enough for either a yes or a no. He'd be more than happy lying on his bed talking to the computer all night and writing things down. But if he can it from her, then all the better. More reliable information and they'd get to know each other better. Win/Win.

Rose presses her lips into a thin line, slightly apologetic, a little bashful.

Sometimes - well, these days, really - she's not even aware that this is the way she talks now.

"Once, if someone were to tell me I'd be thinkin' like this. Speakin' like this ... I'd tell them they were completely off, you know? I was ... completely ordinary. Job. Bills. Livin' at home with my mum. It's the Doctor who taught me all of this, gave me the chance to not just see the stars but to be right amongst them."

She shrugs, laughing lightly.

"I talk about it like it's everyday for me because it sort of is. And I reckon if I didn't see it in the best light possible, I might go mad."

And she believes the same of the Doctor, too. That's why he needs someone with him, to keep from being negatively affected by time travel. It could rip lives apart, but it could also save them.

"Well of course she is." The mechanic thought he sounded quite silly saying something like that. Not that Kaylee would say that to him. Kaylee would love to see that for herself if she was ever given the chance.

"We'll make it. Cap'n will see us right." Even on the Enterprise she believed that Mal would get them through it. They'd look after each other too.

She smiled. "I'd love to meet your ship, way you talk about her an' all she sounds jus' like the best thing." Because you can't dwell on the bad for too long and she has a feeling the way he spoke he'd been though a lot too.
