[Ten Forward] Rooming Assignments | Round #3

They are entering their third month of this nonsense, and Lieutenant Worf will never admit that the increased activity and responsibility is ... thrilling. He is as stone-faced as always, glaring out over the assembled crowd without a hint of happiness. The medical team have cleared through a new crop of passengers, all needing permanent lodgings. So Ten Forward is where you will find yourselves today, staring down the barrel at an unhappy Klingon.

As chief of security, it is Worf's responsibility to instruct everyone on the correct behavior and protocols needed for life aboard the Enterprise. It is his duty, and the captain's instructions, so he will handle this the honorable way. As he has done this before, he has a speech prepared:

"The computer will instruct you on where all cleared-for-access decks are. You only have to ask where the area you are trying to get to is located, and it will give you clear directions. Do not visit any restricted areas. The bridge, engine rooms, transporter rooms, and all command centers are off-limits.

"With that in mind, there are a few rules you must obey before I give you your new assignments. One, do not discharge any weapon while on the Enterprise. Two, do not assault any other passenger aboard in any way; that includes injury, death, or violating their personal rights. Three, do not tamper with the operational procedures of the ship. Four, do not steal items or technology from the ship. Five, do not interrupt any official areas of the ship without proper authorization, and do not invade the privacy of other guest or crew quarters.

"Copies of the Prime Directive will be made available to all of you, and placed in each room. As you are not Starfleet officers, you are not obligated to abide by this rule; however, it is important you understand why we do.

"Now, the rooms," he rumbles, reading off the list of quarters, their location, and the guests who will be sharing them.

[ooc: Open log for building CR with new roommates and meeting neighbors, "party post" style! Everyone should participate if and when they can, so they can get acquainted with who they will be rooming with for at least the next several months. Rooms are aligned the way they would be in a typical hotel: odd numbers on the left, even numbers on the right (so 0711 and 0713 will be next door neighbors, while 0712 is directly across the hall). There is an OOC post in the OOC comm where players can connect with questions, and where we'll post more details about the rooms themselves, so check in over there. If you need to ask security questions, or need them to swing by another thread, just put "Security officer, please!" in the subject line of your tag, and the mods will send someone to you ASAP.]

so this is only a month late, yeah

She didn't move to shake his hand; while she was familiar with the human gesture and recognized it as their version of a polite gesture of greeting, it had always struck her as slightly awkward. Rihannsu attached a little more importance to touching hands.

There was a moment's pause at the question, and then her brows went up. Had no one taught him any more tact than to simply come right out and ask someone what are you?

... Perhaps not. Or perhaps he was just curious. But a Rihannsu child, she thought, would have known better.

"You may call me Irian," she said finally, after another hesitation. Foolish, perhaps, offering her given name so quickly, but he had given her his, and despite the expected human carelessness with names, her own honor required her to return like for like.

"And my people are named Rihannsu, although the Federation still seems to prefer 'Romulan' instead." She'd moved further into the room as she spoke, glancing around. Federation starships had always seemed almost palatial in comparison to all of the ships she herself had served on; even the guest quarters here were larger than she was used to. But then, this was the Federation's flagship; how could they not be?

She turned to glance back at him, thinking of how young he seemed, and how was she to deal with a child, anyhow?

"Do you always ask personal questions of strangers?" It wasn't chiding, not really, but she was out of her depth and it may have been showing a bit.

Henry stored the name in his memory as he would be needing it a lot, it seemed. He'd never lived with anyone but his father so how was he to deal with a woman? And an alien woman at that.

But he continued to smile and nod at the information, noting to looking about Rihannsu and Romulans later on. Then came her question and he looked a little sheepish.

"Sorry. I'm just curious and I've always just asked if I didn't know something that I wanted to know. And besides, we're going to be living together so we're not really strangers." He paused, wondering if he should continue but he did anyway. "I'm a little out of time as well. So I don't know the differences between all the new species yet. Hope I didn't offend you."

When it came down to it, men and women were truly not that different. But between children and adults — and Rihannsu and humans, for that matter — the differences were rather more apparent.

And Henry was certainly no Rihannsu child, but he was... rather precocious, she thought, and more straightforward than she had expected. She didn't quite know what to make of it — and despite his insistence that they wouldn't be strangers, it was hardly as if she was ready to let her guard down.

"You have not," she said, when he was finished. At first she had been slightly put off, but she understood he hadn't intended to give offense. At least he knew enough to apologize; she revised her estimate of his manners slightly upward. "But others might be. I'd be cautious what I said here."

Slowly, she sat down on the edge of one of the couches, refusing to settle back on it just yet, not entirely comfortable with being there in that room that seemed so much larger than even her own quarters on Bloodwing.

"I fear," she admitted at last, "that I have little experience with human children, either." Or children at all, if she were to be fully honest. "You may have to forgive me if I misstep."

She didn't quite smile, but there was a slight rueful note in her voice. Irian had an instinctive dislike of admitting to weakness, but trying to pretend as if she knew what to do here would serve her even more poorly.

"I'm sure you'll be fine." Henry shrugged. He didn't want to lay down a rule of leaving him alone but at the same time, as long as she gave him space and didn't treat him like a kid or mother him, then they would be just fine.

He's not sure what else to say to that. He's immensely interested in her species but he doesn't want to ask too many questions. Perhaps in time they'd get to know each other better. But for now, he starts broad.

"Would you mind if I asked you questions about you or your species? I can ask the computer if you'd rather but the information would be more reliable from you." He hopes that's enough for either a yes or a no. He'd be more than happy lying on his bed talking to the computer all night and writing things down. But if he can it from her, then all the better. More reliable information and they'd get to know each other better. Win/Win.

The look she gave him was something like bemusement — how was he to know whether she would or would not be fine? But she chose to leave that alone, perhaps simply not wishing to pursue that line of dialogue any further.

Irian's hands folded across her lap, and she regarded him perhaps a little more curiously than usual. He was bright enough, at least, to know that what was stored in the computer's database was, at best, rather limited. And more so than that, given the time period they were in and the state of relations between her people and the Federation.

"If you would like," she answered finally, and if she sounded hesitant she had good reason. Giving away information too freely was always a poor idea, at least where she was concerned — and where most Rihannsu were concerned, to be honest — but some information was publicly available, or at least not sensitive. To have a human curious about her people, on a cultural level, would certainly have been a first for her.

And besides, she always reserved the right not to respond if he asked her anything overly personal. Whether he liked it or not.

"I imagine the information the computer might give you would be biased at best." And at worst, openly skewed toward the unfavorable. Then again, she had never read the Federation database where 'Romulans' were concerned — her experience was with similar files the government of the Empire had had on humans and the Federation, which had been rather hostile and unkind in tone. The Empire had not been terribly interested in painting an accurate picture. Perhaps the Federation was different.

"We could always see what the computer says and then compare it to the information you have."

He gave a shrug. He wasn't bothered either way but since they were going to live together, he felt he should make an effort to get to know her. She seemed very closed off and he wasn't sure if that was normal or not for her species. He knew it would take time and he wondered if they had it.
