[Sickbay]: Round One scans and vaccines

[ Captain's Log: a Meeting with the Senior Staff. Wherein Picard discusses what to do with their new, er. "Guests." ]







As you enter sickbay tonight, escorted there by Lieutenant Worf and his security detail, you may notice it isn't all that unusual. There are no terrifying devices or humming machines you could see in a sci-fi thriller. The biobeds along the walls are equipped with biofunction monitors, but look fairly standard. Instead of silver trays filled with metal tools and sawblades, there are an array of small devices that look as harmless as cell phones. As for Chief Medical Officer Crusher herself, she's well-groomed and kindly, wearing her teal uniform and a blue coat. No masks, no rubber gloves. The most dangerous thing about her is that maternal look in her eyes; the one that scolds you for not doing your homework, or leaving your dirty dishes in your room.

The crew makes no promises for Dr. McCoy, on the other hand. He isn't one of ours. You should probably watch your neck.

"All right, don't be shy," Dr. Crusher calls out as you enter. "Come in and sit down. It's just a scan and maybe a hypospray, nothing to worry about."

Probably.

Do not play with Doctor Crusher's toys, Philip. She doesn't like non-medically-cleared people in her sandbox.

"Why don't you let me decide that? Unless you're a medical professional," Beverly continues. "Now, since you obviously know something about the cause of the readings I'm getting, would you care to tell me?"

"I would not."

He'd hoped that voluntarily going along with the exam would ease any possible suspicions, but now he's starting to think he might have been better off trying to avoid it.

"As I told you before, I am in perfect health. That's the truth. Whatever oddity your device has picked up on is irrelevant to that."

Beverly gives Philip one of those looks people give when they know you're being flippant. The tricorder hasn't found anything that would keep him from being cleared, and she does have other people waiting.

Still. First there are people without medical clearance in her sickbay, and now there are closemouthed people without medical clearance. "Very well. I will still need to give you a broad-spectrum vaccination, just to be on the safe side," she says.

"That shouldn't be a problem." He's never had a vaccination before, but he can't see what harm it would cause. "Then, if there's nothing else..."

Beverly Crusher would never cause harm giving a vaccination.

She may be quick with that hypospray, though, and momentarily forget to give Philip much of a warning. "Very good," she says.

"I can't think of anything else, but if you ever do desire to tell me your medical history pertaining to those readings, I'd be happy to hear it."

[decideformyself]

He winces, but it's not too bad. Still, he rubs at his arm afterward. "I will keep that in mind," is the only response she gets. "Er, thank you, Doctor Crusher."

With a quick nod, and still avoiding eye contact, he gets to his feet.

"Of course," she replies, smiling at Philip while he rubs his arm, stepping back from the biobed. Honestly, with the readings she's been getting out of people, where have they all been?

"You're welcome."
