ten_fwd | [Sickbay]: Round One scans and vaccines

[ Captain's Log: a Meeting with the Senior Staff. Wherein Picard discusses what to do with their new, er. "Guests." ]

As you enter sickbay tonight, escorted there by Lieutenant Worf and his security detail, you may notice it isn't all that unusual. There are no terrifying devices or humming machines you could see in a sci-fi thriller. The biobeds along the walls are equipped with biofunction monitors, but look fairly standard. Instead of silver trays filled with metal tools and sawblades, there are an array of small devices that look as harmless as cell phones. As for Chief Medical Officer Crusher herself, she's well-groomed and kindly, wearing her teal uniform and a blue coat. No masks, no rubber gloves. The most dangerous thing about her is that maternal look in her eyes; the one that scolds you for not doing your homework, or leaving your dirty dishes in your room.

The crew makes no promises for Dr. McCoy, on the other hand. He isn't one of ours. You should probably watch your neck.

"All right, don't be shy," Dr. Crusher calls out as you enter. "Come in and sit down. It's just a scan and maybe a hypospray, nothing to worry about."

Probably.

Beverly breaks decorum, just a little, to place a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

"I'm sorry," she says, both for what he's been through and for her suspicion. "This 'program' - it doesn't put you in harm's way, does it? No intense regimes, no dangerous dieting, anything of that sort?"

"The effectiveness comes from a little danger," Billy admits. His posture relaxes, and he's finally brave enough to look up at her with a small smile.

"But the program had the medical tech necessary to prevent anything from endangering our lives. I'm all right now, I promise."

He waits a beat, then two. "So may I find out what a hypospray is?"

She purses her lips.

She doesn't like it, but her job right now is to prevent the spread of disease, not press him for his history.

"Oh yes," she says. "You may. It's just a simple vaccination, it shouldn't even hurt."

She sets the tricorder aside, and picks up the hypospray. She holds it in front of him for a moment so he can examine it for himself, a little amusement sneaking into her expression.

"Spray. You use air pressure for the injection?"

Billy seems to be fine with it. Needles are nothing compared to what he's used to these days, and it certainly sounds like an improvement.

"That's right. It's cleaner and more efficient than needles," she says, pressing the business end of the hypospray to his shoulder. He might feel a slight discomfort, but it's virtually painless. "The noninvasive transport mechanism transfers the injectant straight into the subdermal layer below the skin, or artery. Not that bad, right?"

Billy blinks and it passes. It's nothing, just as she promised. And the explanation is a comfort---something new to add to his stockpile of knowledge, to mull about in his free time. "I definitely appreciate the upgrade---not that I was all that averse to needles, but I can see how useful that is. Thank you, Doctor."

She smirks.

"So do I." Beverly loves her job, she loves medicine, and she always tries to be on the cusp of new technologies. "And you're welcome, Mr. -- Cranston, wasn't it?"

"Yes," he nods, looking a little anxiously at the waiting security personnel. "If it's not too much trouble, is there an area where I could wait for my friend?"

"Who's your friend?" she asks, glancing over the room. "If you promise not to get in the way of the medical personnel, you can likely stand beside them."

"I promise. I can't really learn about this place if I'm interfering, right?"

He smiles and gestures over to Adam, currently being watched over by Bones. "That's Adam. We've been friends for a while, but for some reason he's come from a year ahead of me in time."

"Yes, I've seen quite a number of patients today from all different times," Beverly sighs. She's smiling, though. She's glad to notice his friend is a boy his age – perhaps one who will keep him out of trouble.

"All right, you're free to go," she says, shooing him from the biobed. "Just ... be careful, do you understand?"

Billy nods, waving as he carefully shuffles over to a seat near Adam. He'll really have to be careful if a combat situation comes up---but at least he knows the medics will have it covered."I will, Doctor Crusher. Hopefully I won't return too soon."

"See to it you don't," she says, voice stern but face kind.

She supposes there could be worse people on the ship. She wouldn't even mind if Wesley befriended these boys.
