[Ten Forward] Rooming Assignments | Round #3

They are entering their third month of this nonsense, and Lieutenant Worf will never admit that the increased activity and responsibility is ... thrilling. He is as stone-faced as always, glaring out over the assembled crowd without a hint of happiness. The medical team have cleared through a new crop of passengers, all needing permanent lodgings. So Ten Forward is where you will find yourselves today, staring down the barrel at an unhappy Klingon.

As chief of security, it is Worf's responsibility to instruct everyone on the correct behavior and protocols needed for life aboard the Enterprise. It is his duty, and the captain's instructions, so he will handle this the honorable way. As he has done this before, he has a speech prepared:

"The computer will instruct you on where all cleared-for-access decks are. You only have to ask where the area you are trying to get to is located, and it will give you clear directions. Do not visit any restricted areas. The bridge, engine rooms, transporter rooms, and all command centers are off-limits.

"With that in mind, there are a few rules you must obey before I give you your new assignments. One, do not discharge any weapon while on the Enterprise. Two, do not assault any other passenger aboard in any way; that includes injury, death, or violating their personal rights. Three, do not tamper with the operational procedures of the ship. Four, do not steal items or technology from the ship. Five, do not interrupt any official areas of the ship without proper authorization, and do not invade the privacy of other guest or crew quarters.

"Copies of the Prime Directive will be made available to all of you, and placed in each room. As you are not Starfleet officers, you are not obligated to abide by this rule; however, it is important you understand why we do.

"Now, the rooms," he rumbles, reading off the list of quarters, their location, and the guests who will be sharing them.

"I will remain here to answer questions," Worf concludes. "And my team will be standing by to escort you where you need to be."

The list is also displayed on a PADD, where people can refer to it if they need to.

[ooc: Open log for building CR with new roommates and meeting neighbors, "party post" style! Everyone should participate if and when they can, so they can get acquainted with who they will be rooming with for at least the next several months. Rooms are aligned the way they would be in a typical hotel: odd numbers on the left, even numbers on the right (so 0711 and 0713 will be next door neighbors, while 0712 is directly across the hall). There is an OOC post in the OOC comm where players can connect with questions, and where we'll post more details about the rooms themselves, so check in over there. If you need to ask security questions, or need them to swing by another thread, just put "Security officer, please!" in the subject line of your tag, and the mods will send someone to you ASAP.]

"Ah, good, then I won't have to go into great lengths to explain that I don't have a clue. I appear to be in good company. I'm Angeal Hewley. Nice to meet you." He omitted his rank on the idea that he was leaving behind a life that no longer was his to live. Angeal's soft chuckle was enough to break the sharp edge of his own nerves. He visibly relaxed and indicated with a nod toward the display.

"Any idea, Captain, how to use this? My technological experience of this caliber is a bit limited and I don't have much luck with machines." Angeal admitted with a lopsided grin. He didn't like asking for help but in this case, he definitely needed the advice. He didn't need a replicator incident repeat on a device that everyone needed to use.

Huh. The guy's eyes are glowing.

That's something you don't see every day, even when your days involve flying around the Three Galaxies meeting new people and trying to sign worlds up to the new Commonwealth. But Dylan doesn't comment, just shrugs.

"I have the opposite problem," he admits, eying the screen that Angeal's looking at, but he takes a couple of steps closer to look at it closer. "The technology I'm used to has a couple of thousand years on this."

The lack of what Harper called 'proper AI' on this ship is still disconcerting to him. He knows, of course, that captains and crews flew starships before the invention of the sophisticated AI the High Guard used in its ships, but everything in his training and his experience taught him to command an AI, a ship that played just as much a part in his command as the crew.

"But I should be able to work it out. What are you looking for?"

"Oh?" Angeal canted his head a bit and listened. He turned to face Dylan to give his undivided attention. The soft glow of his bright blue eyes didn't seem to dim in the slightest nor give the impression that he was being judgmental.

"Odd how one moves through time and space, but to be in your past I have stepped into a future just as distant. I think you're far better qualified." He nodded once.

"Actually, I was thinking of finding something that I can be useful in. I heard rumor of a lab that handles plants. I think I might be better suited there. My military knowledge isn't as advanced." He thumbed the great sword on his back. "I have a lot of catching up to do."

Thousands of years might not have been so much of a leap to Dylan were this still his reality, because the Commonwealth would still be there. The Commonwealth, the culture and history that had he'd been steeped in since childhood on Tarn-Vedra, that had stood for civilization and stability for thousands of years.

Here, he's as adrift as he is in the future he's been living in for the past year, because for all the similarities Trance mentioned, this Federation isn't his Commonwealth, this ship isn't High Guard, and here even the reflected authority of thousands of years of the now-gone Commonwealth is gone.

Here, he's just any other guy, out of his time and place.

"Sometimes, I'm not so sure," he says, but it's only an offhand comment. He nods at what Angeal says, but he smiles when he gestures to the sword. "Don't be so sure about that. I've been trained as a swordsman."

Just because the force lance he always wears on his thigh is his preferred weapon, the one that feels as natural as an extension of his arms, doesn't mean that he's not more than capable of using other weapons. The Argosy knew there'd be times when its members wouldn't be able to carry the weapon that said High Guard as much as the uniform he's wearing.

That's not the issue here, though, and Dylan turns back to that after a moment.

"Sure. I'd be surprised if a ship this size didn't have some sort of hydroponics garden. The garden on the Andromeda's a key part of the life support and food supplies."

The head of security had told them to just ask the computer for instructions, and that's something Dylan knows how to do. Even if he doesn't entirely know just how to address this computer. This ship isn't sentient, not like Andromeda, so calling it by name probably won't work.

What did the security chief say? Ask the computer. Maybe just 'computer', then.

"Computer," he says, his voice firm. "Show the location of the hydroponics garden. Or ..." after a moment's thought, he revises his request, "hydroponics lab."

[personal profile] wear_tear_rust 2014-07-26 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Angeal took note of how Dylan handled the computer. He knew that it was voice activated, but it was finding the right combinations to enable the program that he had trouble with. His brows arched in realization and a thoughtful nod as he listened to the explanations, Angeal was increasingly becoming more curious.

The technology he was accustomed to was ancient in comparison to this, but to Dylan's point of view and to Angeal's realization they were galaxies apart. It only added more to his own understanding that he had to learn as much as he could when he could without missing anything if he could help it.

The excitement of space travel and how matters were handled seemed far more complicated than at first glance but Angeal was open minded enough to at least try.

"Thank you." He said politely and turned his attention back to the view screen. The indicator showed where the hydroponics lab was located but it was getting the clearance approval to go down to that part of the ship.

"I wonder, you mentioned that you trained with a swordsman," Angeal faced Dylan once more, "I'm curious about the styles and how much has changed."
dreams_dont_die: (Too competent)

[personal profile] dreams_dont_die 2014-07-29 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
Well, he managed to get the computer to tell him what he wanted; it's simple enough, not much different to asking Andromeda for the same thing, though a little more dependent on the precise form of words than she is for anything that doesn't require a specific code or command to activate. But 'hydroponics lab' seems to have been the right thing to ask for, because the computer pulls up the requested information for them, and Dylan turns aside to let Angeal study it.

When Angeal asks about the High Guard's swordsmanship training, Dylan considers for a moment before answering.

"I can't speak for your training, but the High Guard used ancient tactics and maneuvers as well as new ones." Dylan's training had spanned thousands of years of military strategy and tactics, from Earth, from Tarn-Vedra, from across the Commonwealth.

"The sword isn't my preferred weapon, but I was trained to be expert with it. I could show you a few things sometime."
wear_tear_rust: (It's not a matter of pride.)

[personal profile] wear_tear_rust 2014-07-30 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Now, that piqued Angeal's interest. Even though he might have a kind face, he was a fighter engineered to kill. Unlike most of his podmates, he also knew when to back off and accept defeat during a spar with grace.

He peered at the screen and spotted the blinking light. He took mental note of its location and looked away toward Dylan. A spark of interest and a knowing nod, Angeal was ready to learn whatever differences there were in combat styles. "You're on."

But first, he needed to be acclimated to his new setting and with that meant adjusting to life on a star ship. He learned things quickly which was a SOLDIER trait and a necessary one for adaptation. A quick smile of gratitude soon followed. "I'll be in room seven-forty-seven whenever you're ready. If I'm not there, I may be either at Ten Forward, or at the lab. I promised a friend I would grow her a tree."

There was more to that promise but it was important to him nonetheless.
dreams_dont_die: (Trance - Good luck)

[personal profile] dreams_dont_die 2014-08-03 11:23 am (UTC)(link)
That looks like it's got the guy's interest.

Dylan doesn't usually need a hell of a lot of practice -- he gets enough fighting day to day to keep his skills sharp -- but he used to spar sometimes with some of the other Argosy officers on the Andromeda when he had a full crew, and not everything they did involved force lances.

Hey, if Trance thinks he needs to meet people and make friends here, he can do that.

"We're neighbors. I'm in 0748." He smiles. "And if you get the chance, you should talk to Trance Gemini. You can't miss her. Red hair, gold skin, tends to wear a lot of leather. Helps out in the medbay here. She's the Environmental Systems Officer on the Andromeda. You want to know about growing plants on a spaceship, she's your woman."

Or ... whatever it is that Trance actually is.

"I'll see you around."
wear_tear_rust: (You broke your sword.)

[personal profile] wear_tear_rust 2014-08-03 11:58 am (UTC)(link)
"I'll do that." Angeal gave a nod. He noted the description of Trance's appearance which wouldn't be that difficult.

Certain attributes made people unique and given that his wings were one of those unusual things, Trance may prove to be an easy person to get along with. He wondered if Gaians would be viewed as winged people, but not all Gaians had wings.

He looked back to the map and touched the screen to exit the application. It was more than enough now that he learned and practically memorized the routes to the hydroponics labs. "Having good neighbors is important. It's good that we had this chance to meet."
dreams_dont_die: (Rommie - So far to go)

[personal profile] dreams_dont_die 2014-08-03 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"May as well make some friends while we're here, right?" he says.

It's an echo of the sentiments Trance had expressed when he'd first found her here, but it's more than that. It's what he does, now, since he came out of the black hole. Makes friends, allies, tries to find peoples and planets to help him hold the line against the Magog. Maybe he doesn't see Trance's point about this place helping him find allies, but he certainly does believe her that there are things he can learn from these people.

Back in his own world, he still has a lot of friends to make.
wear_tear_rust: (Ah so it's true.)

[personal profile] wear_tear_rust 2014-08-03 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Angeal certainly couldn't argue that point and a soft chuckle came through. "Some may think it's a bit corny to think that way on a first meeting but in this case I'll make an exception, Captain."

His rank as a SOLIDER First Class was equivalent to a Major but made no comparison to it in the least. As far as he knew, he was a guest in space and wasn't a specialist in space travel or survival. It was this shortcoming that Angeal had no problem adapting and following orders. He was mostly a trainer since his other two partners hardly showed the patience. None of that mattered at this time.

He had Genesis, or rather a version of, here with him and his pride. That was all that mattered. "But you're right."

Dylan laughs.

That reminds him of the sort of thing his crew is always saying to him. That he's too helpful, that he talks when he should fight, that if he'd stop looking for friends everywhere he went, he'd be safer. Maybe some of it's true, but he still holds the ideals to his heart that have always been a part of him -- looking for friendship, for peace, and turning to the force he can bring only when he must.

"Plenty of people have told me that. Though 'corny' is a little more generous than what they usually say. But I can't afford to think any other way."

Not if he and his ship, one ship and one crew, are going to prove the benefits of standing together against the night (and the Magog) to enough worlds to not only ratify their charter, but stand a chance of forming a strong enough force to stand against the World Ship.

Besides, Trance told him he should be making friends here, and her advice is usually good, when she offers it of her own accord.
wear_tear_rust: (Ah so it's true.)

[personal profile] wear_tear_rust 2014-08-04 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Angeal burst out laughing. More than once, he was either told he was too over-protective, too nice, or simply too much of a caring person that the people he worked with often thought he would die in the field than have his head on the mission. Other times, he was seen as too stiff, or too boring because he hardly took risks with others around. It was in his nature and what made him an effective instructor.

He leaned against the wall with one ankle crossing the other and his arms folded. "It seems that great minds think alike. Building bridges might be tough, but worth the effort. You have my hand in friendship, Captain Dylan Hunt."

Needless to say, Angeal liked this guy and he was generally pretty good at judging character. It was the same with Rory. That made two men from different worlds in a forged bond that needed time to become stronger. That was all that he needed.

He knew that people needed on another to survive. It was how social structures were formed and social links created those structures. Without them, everything would fall apart. Corny or not, they were in this together and it was time for Angeal to make this his own.

While in SOLDIER such bonds were limited to work, for Angeal that seemed far too impersonal. He knew every one of his students and remembered his teammates. Good or bad, they were a part of what forged him into a stronger teacher. His smile remained genuine, his eyes and face showed kindness even though his broad brow held a bit of a scowl. His own life had little to do with everything around him and more about what he could do for others.

Dylan seemed like the type of man that had the same but never voiced it. It was too soon to give his assumptions when they had only just met. "It's good to be a little corny. It adds flavor." Angeal finished off with a chuckle.
dreams_dont_die: (Beka - Come on. For me.)

[personal profile] dreams_dont_die 2014-08-04 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'll take it," Dylan says, smiling.

In a way, it's kind of nice. Whatever he might say about wanting to make friends, about greeting people with hands extended in friendship being the only way he can think, it's not easy. It's never easy.

A lot of the time, he winds up having to fall back onto his plan B. Which is usually not so friendly. It would be nice to be greeted with a welcome occasionally. Hell, even Tarazed, a society created for him, for his mission, greeted him and then turned its back on him.

People genuinely wanting to be friends when they first meet? It's a nice change.

Dylan rests one hand on his belt and gives a little chuckle.

"My world could use a little more of the flavor of friendship. Building bridges is what I do. I'm on a mission to forge an alliance to rebuild civilization. There's only one way to do that. "
wear_tear_rust: (genuine smile)

[personal profile] wear_tear_rust 2014-08-04 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
The tone between the two officers were friendly and Angeal felt himself relax more. His smile faded slightly that turned into more introspection through an expression of calm contemplation. Angeal was usually a guarded individual but once that barrier of uncertainty was breached, Angeal was often very loyal until the end. He was no stranger to betrayal and Genesis was proving a challenge for him on a more personal level.

It was refreshing to see that Dylan was just as genuine as he was which made the interaction very easy. It was keeping that bond strong by attaching more threads that made life interesting. He heard stories from all over the Planet with the moral teachings that enduring through all the hardships and suffering until the end with friends and family made life worth fighting for.

"Let me be another bridge for you." Angeal smiled and extended a gloved hand.

While he had complete control over his ability, he still didn't want to risk others to the nature of the Jenova cells. At the very least, he knew that Genesis was already exposed when they were part of the same experiment.

Angeal seems to be a thoughtful sort of guy, and that's something Dylan can respect. Thought. Care. Planning. They're all aspects of a successful warrior and strategist. There's depth in Angeal, if the quiet distance in his gaze is anything to judge by, but Dylan's content to leave that to him.

Everyone has their own thoughts and motivations, and knowing when to draw them out and when to let them sit is part of being a good leader.

So he waits until Angeal's smile consolidates again, and returns it with one of his own as he steps forward to shake his hand.

"Gladly."

It's what Trance told him he needed to do here, and he wants to trust her on that. When she offers advice, it's usually worth listening to.

Rare an occasion as that is.

"It's been good to meet you, neighbor."

Angeal's nod was a friendly one and it helped to know that he had a friend in someone that had experience with space. It was a comfort to know that something was forging which was a considerable weight lifted off of his shoulders.

He broke the contact with a turn toward the quarters. He was glad for once that he didn't hold back his personable nature. It worked in forming a friendship with a like mind that was just as attentive as he was. It was good to know that he wasn't alone in this.

"Likewise. I need to get to my room and settle things but I will be at Ten Forward later this evening. I...need a shower." Angeal half laughed.

"Never let it be said I came between a man and his need for basic comforts."

It will be good, insofar as anything much is about being stranded on an unsettlingly different ship in an unsettlingly different world and an unsettlingly different time (again), to have a more permanent room than the temporary guest quarters they've been given. Even if it's one he has to share; it's been a long time since he shared quarters, but he came up through the ranks in the Argosy like anyone else, including time in shared quarters.

"I'll see you around."

And with that, he starts off again towards what he's been told is the way to his new quarters.
